If you’re new to hair systems, the chances are you probably think toupees and wigs are the same thing. This is the case with many people as both terms have been used interchangeably in popular culture, especially when it comes to men. However, they are both very different and this blog post will look at some of those key differences.

Toupees are for men, wigs are women

The biggest difference between toupees and wigs is who wears them. For the most part, toupees are worn by men while wigs are worn by women. That’s not to say the other gender can’t wear the other. However, toupees really only cover the traditional male pattern baldness areas which is essentially the front and middle of the head. Balding men usually still have hair on the sides and back of their head with the toupee not covering those particular parts.

While men can wear full cap wigs, wigs are traditionally for women and cover the entire head as opposed to certain parts like a toupee. Women usually braid their existing hair or tie it up before putting on a wig or have suffered complete hair loss due to chemotherapy or alopecia

Wigs last longer

Human hair wigs tend to be more expensive than men's toupee, mainly due to the amount of hair they carry as well as the quality if they’re using premium Chinese Remy hair for example. However, they also last much longer. It varies depending on the base construction, but men’s hair systems can last anywhere from four to six weeks to six months at the most.

Women's wigs, meanwhile, can last from a year to even longer if maintained and taken care of correctly. Part of this is because most wigs mainly use monofilament material which contributes to extending the durability of a hair system. Additionally, wigs don’t necessarily need to be attached with wig glue or wig tape which contributes in making them last longer than toupees.

Less maintenance required with toupees

While wigs last longer than toupees, they also require more maintenance. Why is this the case if wigs don’t have to be attached with any adhesives? In general, wigs are bigger than toupees mainly due to the amount of hair which naturally means more maintenance for that hair. In addition, the bases are generally more complex with wigs so maintenance with a thin skin hair system for example will be easier than a wig which uses many different materials.
