He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, with a degree in physics, and in 1990, he attained a medical degree from the University of South Florida. His residency at the Penn State program in Hershey, Pennsylvania, was eventually completed in 1998. He eventually returned to South Florida and, after 10 years in private practice, began working for the Memorial Hospital System in 2002.
