‘Home quarantine,’ ‘social distancing,’ ‘self-isolation’ are among the many words that have become quite imperative and mundane in our lives, especially within the past few months. They all are the unfortunate consequences of a war that is currently being waged, by the global community, against an unheralded pandemic brought forth by the novel coronavirus.

While governments and health professionals are working round the clock relentlessly to guarantee victory for everyone, there are certain things that you, as an individual, can also do to help them in this battle. Maintaining your strength through healthy eating is one of them.

Not an excuse to make your body junk

Staying at home is undoubtedly the need of the hour to break the chain of transmission. Still, this Coronavirus lockdown should not serve as an impetus for people to binge on junk and other forms of unhealthy food. Even if all the other variables are beyond the domain of your control right now, what you feed your body is still a choice that you can make. Health is wealth- a fact that couldn’t ring more true than in times like these when you should be stringently maintaining a strong immune system through the timely consumption of healthy meals.

Misconceptions are the real deal-breaker

Healthy food being conceived as a bête noire, especially by the younger population, is entirely due to the misconceptions surrounding it, given birth to by the witty advertising campaigns of multinational fast-food giants. The notion that healthy meals constitute only salads and green vegetables stems from these very campaigns. Even though fruits and vegetables do form a considerable portion of healthy foods, these foods are, however, not just restricted to them.

A healthy meal is one that has a perfect blend of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins in the right proportion. Consequently, it is essential to disproving these farce notions and instead spread the right kind of awareness regarding healthy eating.

The first step is always the hardest

Nonetheless, the real obstacle here is not healthy food, in itself, but the process of switching to it. This can pose quite a challenge for all those who have been under the overbearing influence of junk food for several years. But the feat is not unachievable.

The easiest way to make this transition is by replacing at least one junk component in each of your meals with a healthier alternative. For instance, if you are in the habit of having white bread for breakfast, you could exchange it for wheat bread the next day and maybe even multigrain the third day. In this way, you will be gradually kidding your body into healthy eating and not be forcing it to change its eating habits overnight. The latter method may prove to be effective in the short-run. Still, it would certainly backfire in the long-run when the body comes out of the de-addiction phase and starts craving for unhealthy items again. Thus it is necessary to be patient with one’s body to ensure the longevity of the habit of healthy eating.

Nothing can beat home-made meals

The final hurdle standing in the path of healthy eating is the growing surge of fast-food restaurants offering home delivery options. Despite the Covid-19 lockdown bringing businesses in several sectors to a standstill, the food-delivering industry seems to be comparatively less affected due to many restaurants now opting for their services to deliver the food. This has, in turn, augmented the trend of unhealthy eating.

Home-cooked meals are the only remedy to this malady. Since most of you are endowed with an immense amount of time now, cooking food at home should be taken up. This will not only give some rest to your credit card balances but also fill your body with nutritious things. Moreover, cooking at home is always a better option. You can replace saturated fats with unsaturated ones and cut down on the intake of sugar in these meals. It is otherwise impossible in restaurant ordered foods.

Covid-19 is out to test not only our physical strength but also our mental resolve. Hence it becomes increasingly important to maintain a general atmosphere of unperturbed positivity so that the virus never gets to us. Positivity radiates from a healthy soul, and a healthy soul can only reside in a healthy body. So stay home, eat healthily, and stay safe!
