When you watch a boxing duel, what do you see? You get to see two participants putting on gloves and throwing punches at each other. And that seems to make you believe that boxing is nothing but throwing punches. If that is your belief about boxing, then you are wrong.

Boxing calls for excellent skills. And it is the skills you need to master when you undergo boxing training.

So let us walk through some of the skills associated with boxing:

Good Stance

You cannot undermine the importance of the right stance when it comes to boxing. As a good stance is necessary to maintain balance, it is vital for attacking as well as defensive techniques. While throwing punches, boxers should not lose their balance. If any of the boxers get off balance, the opponent will gain the upper hand. So, how can boxers maintain a good stance? The following are the ways:

  • Turn sideways to your opponent to lead with the shoulder opposite to your punching hand
  • Keep your feet width apart
  • Distribute your body weight evenly on your feet. And turn your feet at a 45-degree angle to your opponent

Footwork

Boxers need to maintain good footwork to throw punches from a balanced position. The key to good footwork is fitness and speed. The following are the rules of footwork:

  • Balance your weight on both feet
  • Keep your feet apart
  • Move around the boxing ring with short sliding steps
  • Do not allow your feet to cross
  • Move the foot that is closest to the direction in which you want to move

Uppercut

The Uppercut is a knockout punch. It is delivered at close quarters from underneath. Usually aimed at the jaw with either hand, the Uppercut throws a surprise at the opponent. To throw the right Uppercut, transfer your body weight onto your right foot and twist your shoulders and hips to the left and bring your right fist directly on to your target. However, there is a drawback too. If you are not able to deliver the right Uppercut, there are chances of your opponent counterattacking you with his version of the Uppercut.

Now, you have understood some of the techniques involved in boxing. And it is now also the time for you to know the associated benefits as well.
