Dehydration is one of the major concern in young children. School going kids aged under 12 years are even more vulnerable to the problem. Dehydration is astute of being exhausted due to poor water level sin the body. Dehydration has a very high impact on our body as each cell our body goes to a state of being labile, stressed and susceptible for poor metabolism. Major body parts affected by dehydration includes brain, skin, mucus membrane, digestive system and cardiac system. Moreover, muscles become jittery as they do not get required water for normal concentration. Extreme state of dehydration is manifested by, sleepiness, irritability, or confusion, sunken eyes, cracked lips, dry tongue , increased heart rate and palpitation. Dehydration can range from mild, moderate, severe, and profound. Let us look at some tips for managing dehydration.
Some dos and don’ts
1. Drink adequate fluid, adequate refers to a state you fell no more thirsty at any point of time.
2. Small and frequent intake of fluid helps to keep the body systems healthy and rejuvenated.
3. Plain water is best however, mineral content really adds value. Sodium content in the water helps to hold it for long time.
4. For severe dehydration, it may be necessary to provide IV fluids in the hospital. However, in most cases it can be managed by self.
5. Follow the quantitative and scientific approach while managing dehydration. A child in his primary school need 4 to 6 cups of fluid each day, while child older than 12 years drink 6 to 8 cups.
6. Prepare a scheduled plan of rehydration where child has to take a cup if water after every 90 minutes and this must be habituated.
7. Adding a pinch of salt and lemon makes a huge difference as sodium in salt helps to retain water in the body. Sodium allows the cells to actively catch water.
8. Diet that a child consumes must have enough water in them. Preferably provide semi-liquid and liquid foods such as soup, juices, milk, and some fruit based items.
9. Teachers at school must implement a plan of rehydrating and it must be made compulsory.
10. Advise child to carry a water bottle always, especially during outings, sports events and activities that demands more efforts.
11. Offer limited caffeinated beverages while replacing them gradually by other healthy choices.
12. It is important to remember that our body is about 70% water, and the same applies when it comes to decide on what is the proportionate intake of water against the solid foods,
13. Children reluctant to drink plain water may be given some natural additives however, it cannot be the priority.
14. Make your child to drink a cup of fresh water after brushing teeth in the early morning.
15. Educate kids about the importance of fluids and how to keep their body hydrated.
16. Check the child`s water bottle regular to ensure he is consuming enough.
