Football remains to be a popular sport for thousands of people across the globe. With many day-dreaming to be the next Messi or Ronaldo, the world will praise. The Football field is becoming highly competitive. Few aspiring footballers believe that a great game and winning a match or two is enough to grab the attention of a coach and gain your breakthrough into the realm of international football, to relish the limelight. However, not to dismay you, but those verves flooded chants and fame that the football players fancy are obtained after their fair share of rejections, failures, and setbacks. Yet, what made players triumph is their unwavering determination to achieve what they had desired.

Nevertheless, only if the aspiring players could get the foggiest idea about what the coaches are in quest of, they can develop prerequisite skills to gain the long-yearned spotlight. We had a heart to heart talk with the maven Head Coach of Øygarden FK in the Norwegian First Division formerly recognized at Nest-Sotra Football, Bryant Lazaro, asking him to spill the beans about selection requirements. Bryant Lazaro holds a Master’s degree in Football talent identification from Real Madrid Graduate School, making him the wellspring of information we are in search of.

Bryant Lazaro reveals that as obvious as it is, body type and size remain the quintessential criteria of selection. “Height, BMI, and body types are primary things to know whether or not the person is fit to play. However, it does not imply that if you are not on the leaner side, it is an apparent rejection. Since the athletes are teenagers, coaches give leniency as their body type would attain drastic changes in training,” he says.

The second crucial trait coaches search for in prospect players is their growth potential, followed by curiosity to learn. “We ponder their growth potential minutely, especially since being a teenager, their physical growth, mental capacity, and eagerness to learn is prone to transform with age,” says Bryant Lazaro.

Bryant Lazaro unleashes that the third trait is the strength of the players. “We are aware that the weight training programs can too, empower the strength of players, yet having an idea of their strength a bit, helps us apprehend that we picked the right candidate,” he says.

Additionally, the trait that Coaches are way too vigilant about is the coach-ability of the players. “Throughout the training, we will coach players, give instructions, and even give them the necessary tough time to endure their perseverance. If the players are not able to follow instructions immediately, it is a big turnoff,” says Bryant Lazaro. “It is only because we desire players to be the master at their skills, and being coachable makes us capable of teaching players adequately, making them learn the required skills,” he adds.

The demeanor and personality of the players is a crucial trait assessed by the coaches. Bryant Lazaro expresses that football is an all-inclusive sport that will require players to interact with each other, to coordinate in the best interest of the team. “We pay heed to the communication skills of the player and how much he values teamwork. This is essential because, in the end, it is the team that wins and not the player alone,” he says. Bryant Lazaro further clarifies, “this does not mean that an introvert, shy player is not welcomed by the coaches, it just that the players must learn to be a genuine team player, who can collaborate efficiently.”

Bryan Lazaro also told that along with talent, we locate for passion among the players and examine how they determined they are to follow their dreams. “We look for athletes that are stubborn to achieve their goals, someone who is not willing to give up no matter how hard it gets on the pathway success,” he says.

Lastly, Bryant Lazaro highlighted that coaches are leaders who teach players to become a pro; however, success remains in the hands of players. “We even notice how the player responds to adversity, and how he tackles his failure, does he give in to the valleys and loose hopes for the peaks? Because those who do not know how to learn from disappointments are the weakest contenders of all,” he says.

With the idea of significant elements analyzed by the world’s top football coach, we hope that aspiring football players can acquire the imminent skills to be at the top of their game.
