Back pain is one of the most common conditions people visit the doctor for, and can range from extremely mild and infrequent, to intense and constant pain levels. Back pain can be caused by a large number of reasons. Studies estimate up to 80% of the community may be effected by lower back pain. A doctor or a chiropractor may confirm the cause behind your back pain through a blood test or an imaging study.

Bad posture

Bad posture is a leading contributor to lower back pain. You see, the way you lean, slouch and stand may contribute to an inbalance in your posture. This may then lead to pain. In the case that bad posture is not the sole cause for your back pain, it can definitely worsen your pain. Some people consider a back brace for posture problems. Image for post

Ligament or muscle strain

This is usually due to repeated heavy lifting movements or a sudden awkward motion which may strain your back muscles and spinal ligaments. Individuals who are in poor physical condition may experience painful muscle spasms as a result of strained ligaments and back muscles.

Ruptured or bulging discs

The disc in your back acts as a cushion between the vertebrae bones in your spine. In the case of a ruptured or bulging disc, the soft material in the disc may press on a nerve, which subsequently may cause back pain. Disc disease may be discovered through X-rays of your spine. Keep in mind that not all ruptured or bulging discs cause back pain.

Arthritis

Arthritis may affect your lower back. Arthritis may lead to the narrowing of the space around your spinal cord, causing spinal stenosis and applying pressure onto the nerves that travel through the spine.

Osteoporosis

Your spine’s vertebrae may develop painful fractures if your bones become fragile and brittle due to osteoporosis. Chiropractors and physiotherapists may help further identify the cause of your back pain and may help treat it as well. Keeping in mind the potential causes of your back pain may also help during the diagnosis process.
