Christopher Nolan is one of the most reputed filmmakers in Hollywood. However, he received many complaints from his fellow director friends regarding the use of the sound effect in his science fiction movie, Interstellar. Christopher Nolan is a filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer known for his distinctive mainstream movies. He has received 34 Oscar nominations for his works and received ten out of them. Nolan is known for his projects including The Prestige, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet. The director was nominated for eight Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. He also earned Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Picture for the movie Dunkirk. Most of his movies are based on metaphysical themes, construction time, and exploring human morality. Unconventional concepts and images inspire Nolan’s work. The director has received many honours and awards. He was also featured in the list of 100 most influential people in the world published by Time. However, audiences and fellow filmmakers criticized his choices of sound effects in the 2014 science fiction film Interstellar. The film is set in 2067 when dust storms and crop blights threaten the survival of humans. Corn was the only viable crop. The younger generation is taught fake history, including the fake Apollo moon missions. Joseph Cooper is a widowed engineer and a former NASA pilot living with his two children Murphy “Murph” Cooper, Tom Cooper and his father-in-law Donald. The engineer later leaves the Earth to save humankind. Interstellar is one of Nolan’s greatest movies. Sadly, the film did not get much appreciation from the audience. It received a 72% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 364 reviews with an average of 7.08/10. According to CinemaScore, the film got an average of “B+” grade on the A+ to F scale. Interstellar received few nominations in the 87th Academy Awards and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. During the interview with Indiewire, Nolan shared that he gets complaints about the sound design in the Interstellar movie. Some of his peers also expressed inconvenience to hear the dialogues properly. To which the award-winning director explained that he tried a non-traditional method with the sound mixing. The team took traditional filters that filter out the low-end frequency. Nolan argued that the effect was performing remarkably in the IMAX experience. He expressed his point of view by saying that they have got a lot of complaints. He got calls from other directors who said that the dialogues are inaudible in the film. While some thought the music is too loud but the fact is the team has intentionally chosen to mix it. He added that he was shocked by how conservative people still are when it comes to sound. Because the filmmaker can shoot the film on an iPhone, no one would complain. But if he mixes the sound in a certain way, the audience just does not accept it. Trying to take artistic liberties with sound or picturization is very exciting in an industry as directors fear to try something new and out of the box. Unfortunately, neither the filmmakers nor the audience understand Nolan’s idea behind the sound mixing and audiences’ reaction to Tenet resurfaced their past experiences with Interstellar.
