Lenovo announced the launch of Smart Clock with Google Assistant variant with the name “Smart Clock Essential.” Lenovo jumped into the smart clock market last year. The Smart Clock Essential is an upgraded version of its predecessor. When Lenovo launched the Smart Clock, it never tried to compete with other products. The intention of Lenovo to bring the Smart Clock Essential is to render a high-powered multipurpose clock. The product is targeted towards the delivery of high-functionality smart clocks.
What’s there in the box?

USB 2.0, Type-A Cable
Physical Structure
The smart clock weighs 328 grams and has 113.9mm x 75.0mm x 79.2mm as dimension. It is available only in grey color. Lenovo’s Smart Clock Essential has a 4″ 7-segment LED with an IPS AntiGlare LED backlight. The outer cabinet is polycarbonate-built with soft fabric. There are separate icons for time and temperature. It supports both 12-hour and 24-hour format for a time, and Fahrenheit and Celsius for temperature. There are also icons available for the day of the week and the current weather status.
Processor & OS
Lenovo’s Smart Clock Essential runs on MediaTek MT8167S processor ( 1.50GHz ). The MediaTek MT8167 series processors provide high performance and better power efficiency. This processor has 64-bit Quad-core processing using four 64-bit ARM Cortex-A35 cores and an Imagination PowerVR GE8300 GPU. Hence, it ensures seamless and super-responsive interactivity with the applications. Smart Clock Essential supports Android Things (code name – Brilio). The Android Things OS integrates with different MCU platforms. So, Android Things can work in as low as 32–64 MB of RAM as an IoT OS.
Memory
The new smart clock of Lenovo has a one GB LPDDR3 memory drive. Though LPDDR3 is expensive, they consume less power and hold a better form factor. Also, due to less power consumption, LPDDR3 generates less heat. LPDDR3 architectures have an optimum data transfer rate (I/O data rate of 2133 MT/S) of both read and write than other DDR models. Apart from memory, Lenovo’s Smart Clock Essential provides a hard disk of 8 GB.
Audio & Connectivity
Lenovo’s Smart Clock Essential comes with a 1.5″ 3W speaker and two passive radiators. Due to the air pressure principle working behind passive radiators, the speakers’ woofers get extra power and resonance. Passive radiators are ideal for Bluetooth diminutive speakers. It supports Bluetooth 5.0, one of the most vital parameters of wireless headphones and audio hardware. The data transfer rate in Bluetooth 5.0 is 2 Mbps, which is twice that of Bluetooth 4.2. Also, the maximum communication distance that comes with Bluetooth 5.0 is 240 metres.
Google Assistant
Voice assistants cannot be a good companion unless they have the power of Iron Man’s Jarvis. But, they can always be loyal to the user’s command and follow them without any tussle. Lenovo’s Smart Clock with Google Assistant ensures improvisation in the functionality of the smart clock. Users can adjust the LED Brightness, set the alarm, etc. But, there is one glitch in it. The smart clock will not understand your instructions like “set the alarm 5 minutes ahead” or “set the alarm 10 minutes late.”
Conclusion
Lenovo’s Smart Clock Essential can be a good catch if the user is buying their very first smart clock product. On some parameters, it doesn’t perform well. For instance, it won’t flash any light during the alarm notifications. One can buy the product from Lenovo’s website.
