Being a digital nomad is rewarding indeed with an increasing number of people realizing it every day. While it has become common practice to observe everything through the prism of millennials, it is important to underline that digital nomads are varied in age and vocations. Listing the most beneficial careers for digital nomads is somewhat difficult, given that the matter is heavily influenced by demand in every country. Thus, saying that programmers are widely sought may be true, but the demand may not be high in the country of your choice.

Because of this, we have compiled a list of top careers for digital nomads in general, relying on the convenience of the vocation itself rather than sifting through the demand and offer of different countries.

1. IT Professionals

As mentioned above, IT professionals can expect to find a job pretty much anywhere. Programmers and sys admins, especially experienced ones, may enjoy all the benefits of their knowledge almost anywhere in the world.

Because these positions are easily performed online, programmers may well work remotely from any chosen destination. The most popular job positions in the IT sector cover software, website development and apps.

As regards website development, the choices are multiple. For example, some professionals deal with design only, while others offer full packages. With WordPress still being enormously popular, pretty much anyone can learn to be a developer.

Finally, with the rise of mobile devices, app developers can expect to land high-performance jobs with ease.

2. Teachers

Teachers - and especially language teachers - can rely on international offers should they wish to relocate. English language teachers, for example, are in high demand in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe in particular, although other countries may also have lucrative offers. More often than not, teachers are needed in public and private schools, and some countries also look for online teachers (Bali, for example).

Finally, online teaching has been gaining popularity, as proven by Udemi, for example. Simply put, if you can create professional online lessons/ and advertise them properly, chances are, you can live wherever you want.

3. SEO Specialists and Social Media Marketers

SEO is crucial for any company and specialists versed in search engine optimization can rely on either working for a large company or freelancing for multiple clients. Either way, they’ll need to have some experience because competition can be tough.

Another relatively new vocation is social media marketer. Because cross-promotions are vital for business success, many companies are looking for skilled marketers who have mastered their trade.

Note that both of these professions are easy to learn but difficult to master as the rules of the game change all the time.

4. Customer and Technical Support Representatives

If you work in the customer support niche and are looking to relocate, you may find it difficult to do so unless you are a highly-skilled professional with a unique skill set. The reason for this is that every company provides training to their support representatives, meaning that they do not need to import people from abroad.

However, if you desire to travel and work to support yourself, you should have no difficulties landing a part-time or freelance customer- or technical support job.

5. Writers and Translators

Similarly, writers can work from anywhere in the world, and they don’t even need constant internet access. Freelance writers can work in different branches - from web content writing to blogging to professional academic writing.

The same applies to translators, especially for languages not many people speak.

However, because these jobs are perfectly performed remotely, it may be difficult to relocate on a work visa. You can still travel and work remotely, though. In fact, pretty much all vocations related to writing, design and app/software development may well be performed remotely.

6. Data Entry Jobs

This is one of the most basic jobs anyone can do. It is especially popular among backpackers who aren’t really looking for profits but rather to support themselves while they travel.

The job can be more boring than other digital nomad jobs, but it can still support travelers until they’ve mastered their desired skills.

7. Photographers

Good photographers can travel the world and earn significant sums of money wherever they are. They are always in high demand if you know where to look for jobs. Simply offering your services to the businesses in need of photographers in the place you’re visiting is often enough. Remember to have a portfolio handy, though. A picture is worth a thousand words, after all.

8. Virtual Assistants

The virtual assistant position is one of the newer inventions of the modern world, offering people with no particular skill sets an opportunity to work and travel. Depending on the company looking for one, the roles may vary greatly.

Some managers look for virtual assistants who will help them handle the tasks they have no sufficient time for, for example keeping track of incoming emails and task progress, and then providing updates about them.

Normally, virtual assistants are expected to be proficient with a number of online tools, notably Google Suite, Excel, Slack, Asana and social media.

9. Consultants

Generally speaking, professionals with rich expertise in their vocation are always a welcome addition. Good consultants usually have years and years of successful projects behind them.

Niche-specific consultants are in high demand almost everywhere, so if you’re a highly-skilled professional with a strong background in your field, you shouldn’t have difficulties finding a consultant job wherever you go.

10. Affiliate Marketers

Lastly, affiliate marketing has been popular for some time and is known to be capable of generating stunning sums if done right. By extension, affiliate marketers who know what (and where) they’re doing are always in demand.

Because the idea of earning money while doing virtually nothing seems to be tempting to wider masses, affiliate marketing is certain to keep expanding, so if you’re looking for a profession that will allow you to travel with ease and yet earn enough money to enjoy life, affiliate marketing is just the choice.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are jobs and jobs to choose from. If your goal is to simply travel the world and support yourself, you might stick to more general jobs that are in demand. If you are looking to build a prosperous career abroad, you will need to actually master a skill or two.
