Let's be truthful for a moment. How many times have you heard your children say, "I'm bored. There's nothing to do here." or words to that effect? There are plenty of ways to engage with your kids as a family and to have a blast together without making a huge dent in the household budget. If you've got cabin fever, you're not alone, and our activity experts have some fun ways to spend time with your kids this spring.

Schedule A One Day Road Trip

Fill up the gas tank, pile everyone in, and hit the road, Jack!

Explore your own state and visit a new community. Let each family member suggest a town or city in the area that they would like to see, write it on a slip of paper, throw the papers into a hat and draw one.

By springtime, the weather is warming up, nature looks fresh and all abloom, and there are many things you can do in a community. Maybe there's an important attraction there or a museum or great bookstore or downtown cafe to pop into.

Host A Family Movie Night

Sometimes, it's cozy to stay indoors and kick back in the evening. A family movie night is another excellent way to spend a few quality hours together watching a good flick. You can make popcorn, buy some movie candy favorites, and get comfy on the couch with some snuggly pillows.

Discuss the movie afterward, and ask your children for a movie review to see what they thought of the film.

Go Birdwatching And More

During these past few months of uncertainties and lockdowns, folks have been looking for creative ways to spend time, and birdwatching is more popular than ever.

Backyard birdwatching is fascinating, and your children will enjoy spotting these colorful, winged creatures flying about. If you are an apartment dweller, you can take a walk to the park and view a number of breeds taking flight.

The great thing about birds is that these magnificent animals are found everywhere both in rural and urban communities.

You can purchase sunflower seeds for the birds, and set up your own backyard bird feeder to attract them. It is wonderful to watch their habits and how they swoop in to enjoy their tasty treats.

Plant Spring Flowers

Getting outside is healthy for the body and soul, and getting the hands in the dirt is a rewarding experience. Take your kids to a nursery, and let them choose some pretty, spring flowers to plant.

Children can be assigned little chores for watering and checking on the plant's growth, etc.

Kids like to watch plants grow, and you could even try an herb garden in your kitchen window. There are so many plant types to consider this spring.

Plan A Home Treasure Hunt

Whether it's inside or outside, a treasure hunt is a ball for both kids and adults. You can draw up a map and hide objects in unique areas of the home, apartment, or backyard.

Write up some clever printable clues to help your children know where to look. For instance: "If you want to find more clues, look in the place where you put your shoes."

Or, "While you're up walking around, go to the place where you go to lie down."

For example, you could also set up a flashlight treasure hunt in the evening where the kids search for items with a map and use their flashlights to find them.

Share Some Music

Let your kids hear the songs you grew up with, and then, listen to their favorites. You can play a family game of musical chairs or bust a move and get everyone dancing.

Music brings a smile to every face, and if you play a musical instrument or your children do, it's lovely to get together and enjoy these beautiful sounds.

Music is about self-expression.

Having fun together as a family doesn't have to break the wallet. There are tons of affordable activities you can do as a family unit this spring. Try one or more of the fun ideas we have listed here, and then create some more!
