The global pyrophyllite market size is expected to reach USD 237.2 million by 2027 registering a CAGR of 5.7%, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Increasing demand for refractories on account of growing steel production is expected to drive the market. Characteristics of pyrophyllite, such as high melting point and low thermal expansion, make it applicable in the refractory industry for decreasing shrinkage & cracking and resist thermal expansion. It is ideal for some types of refractories as it does not need calcining.

In addition, its physical nature helps in reducing the wear & tear on machinery & molds that are in contact with wet and dry products. The government initiatives by the Asian countries aimed at expanding the manufacturing sector are expected to drive the refractory and foundry casting industries in the region. For example, in 2015, China launched the “Made in China 2025” plan to expand the domestic manufacturing sector in 10 key industries.

In addition, growing demand for kiln furniture in countries, such as Taiwan, South Korea, Philippines, China, and India, owing to an increase in ceramic production is expected to boost the demand for pyrophyllite. Consumption of refractories in steelmaking was around 60 to 70% in 2018. Refractories find applications in blast furnaces for steel making on account of the properties, such as thermal conductivity and ability to withstand high temperatures. Refractories are produced using various raw materials, pyrophyllite being one of them.

Asia Pacific is the largest regional market owing to the high demand for fired and unfired refractories. Properties of pyrophyllite, such as low expansion on heating, less contracting on cooling, excellent volume stability, and resistance to deformation at high temperatures, make them more suitable for use in refractories. Increasing demand for refractories owing to the rising steel production and a widespread shortage of refractory raw materials, such as bauxite and alumina, are likely to drive the demand for pyrophyllite over the coming years.

The growing demand for ceramics, especially in Asian countries, is also anticipated to be a key driving factor for market growth. Pyrophyllite after heat treatment undertakes many properties of fired ceramics and hence, is suitable for small-volume production and prototypes. The natural pyrophyllite is very easy to fabricate but has low strength. On being heat-treated between 1250-1300°C, it exhibits high strength, electrical properties, and hardness.
