Metformin is a drug belonging to a class of medications called biguanides, prescribed to patients with Type 2 diabetes. It is administered to reduce blood sugar levels to the normal range. Metformin performs this function by – decreasing the hepatic (produced by the liver) glucose production, decreasing the gastrointestinal absorption of glucose from food and increasing the insulin sensitivity of target cells to break down glucose into energy. Metformin is highly popular as it helps bring down sugar levels without increasing the weight of the patient.
