Football language Raymond Verheijen stress the importance of an objective football language. The language needs a structure and is action orientated. Looking at figure 1 you will see Raymond Verheijen’s Football Theory. Talk to the players within a context and what actions they actually do. Or as Verheijen states it: > “Say what you see!” Figure 1. Football Theory An example of football language is to make it clear to your right defender to make more overlapping runs. Non-football language would be to tell the player to take more initiative. The components According to Verheijen there are four components to football. They are all connected and can be distinguished but not separated, which is exemplified in figure 2. Figure 2. Components Verheijen describes communication (non-verbal and verbal) as the most fundamental component. Based on this information the player makes his/her decision. To be able to execute this decision he/she needs to have technical abilities. Last but not least, football fitness allows the player to perform for 90 minutes. Figure 3. Application Summary According to Verheijen you first need to sort out the components of the game in order to have an objective reference for the players. From that order you can apply your Art of Coaching. You decide which football actions to choose, where in the pitch to execute them, in which organization etc. When communicating that idea, always use contextual football words.
