Like many other functions of the body, hormones are responsible for maintaining healthy bones. Hormonal imbalance in women creates so many problems and one of them is fragile bones. The following is a list of causes of bone problems in women due to hormonal imbalance.

The decrease in levels of estrogen

The female sex hormone estrogen helps to build stronger, durable, denser, and healthier bones. The decrease in levels of estrogen causes a reduction in bone mass and density, which ultimately results in fragile bones. This condition is known as osteoporosis. After menopause, most of the women lose their estrogen levels and therefore experience osteoporosis. The most common cause of osteoporosis is estrogen deficiency in women. Due to osteoporosis, the risk of hip, wrist, spine, etc., fracture increases in older women. Estrogen deficiency in women can be treated through Hormone Replacement Therapy .

Imbalance of thyroid hormone

Thyroid hormone is not only significant for maintaining the weight of the body, but it is important for the healthiness of bones too. If the balance of thyroid hormones gets disturbed, it can cause the bones to become brittle and weak. High levels of thyroid increase the risk of bone loss.

Hyperparathyroidism

The parathyroid hormone tells the bones how to utilize calcium. It regulates the proper functioning of calcium. Women with high levels of parathyroid suffer a condition called hyperparathyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism causes the loss of calcium deposits through urine. This ultimately causes the bones to become deficient in calcium and makes them weaker.

High levels of cortisol

Cortisol is a stress hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands. Osteoporosis due to high levels of cortisol in the blood is quite uncommon, but not impossible. High levels of cortisol are commonly known to cause obesity and weight gain, but it also causes weaker bones.

Diagnosis of osteoporosis

The bones continue to get weaker with years. It won’t stop. You must make an appointment with a specialized doctor who examines your condition and finds out the cause of weak bones in you. You must get yourself diagnosed and treated accordingly before it gets too late.
