Social networks have become a daily topic. Despite this, little is discussed about its use in educational spaces, be it school or university. We interviewed not to present a complete panorama of the relationship between education and social networks, but to generate interesting reflections for researchers, teachers, parents, and students in general.
Social Media Marketing have become a daily topic. Despite this, little is discussed about its use in educational spaces, be it school or university. We interviewed not to present a complete panorama of the relationship between education and social networks, but to generate interesting reflections for researchers, teachers, parents, and students in general.
Serrano has a degree in Education from the University and a Master in Distance Education from the University of London and has conducted research on e-learning and related topics.
How is traditional education different from e-learning?
The e-learning strategy and distance education, in general, have a very important requirement: that one strengthen their autonomy to learn. The educational system has formed us as passive and receptive students, while in distance education we require a different attitude towards learning.
We have to strengthen ourselves in reducing dependency on a teacher and being better able to establish the learning outcomes for ourselves. We have to define when something is right or wrong, not necessarily waiting for a teacher to pronounce, but contrasting with the content of a book or the approaches of someone within the group of colleagues. When we don't have all those mechanisms that control us, we have a hard time staying in learning experiences based on independent study.
Today there are certain population groups with a greater disposition towards autonomy in learning. For example, the group of university teachers that I receive in my virtual course is people who are willing, and yet the same experience of the course hits them. They are always waiting for me to speak, write or tell them much more. I answer them saying that my ideas are in the readings.
Here there is a clash between the roles played by the virtual tutor and the ones played by the teacher in the classroom. The latter usually answers and gives everything to the students. When using mediation facilitated by technology, the guardian must take advantage of it in a different way. One must set limits to what he does as a tutor so that the participants enter into the dynamics of managing their learning.
How did the Online Tutors course come about for your University diploma?
Through the Network of Jesuit Universities in Latin America, in which they see it as very important to take advantage of all the technologies for training. This network has other courses that they have offered for several years and for this they required virtual teachers, hence the need to train teachers in the orientation of virtual courses, in addition to providing this opportunity to teachers who are restless with the use of technologies in The education. In this course, we propose to university teachers (and some schoolchildren) a virtual learning experience, and this is taking place from the perspective of reflecting on their own experience of the course.
