This Event is ... Emceelicious
Hello!
Ladies and Gentlemen
A very warm welcome to……
Does this sounds familiar?
Is this what we hear more often when an Emcee gets on stage? Correct, we do, and some variations, of course, which make us feel good, happy, pleasant etc.
But what is it that catches our attention or gives us not so good vibes … ?
Being an Professional Emcee for more than a decade in the industry I have got to learn so much while on the job. Though the book called ‘Mistakes’ has lots of lessons to teach, in our profession mistakes are pretty unhealthy.
So as an Emcee cooking up an Event and wanting it to turn out “Emceelicious” is what every Emcee would wish. Well I just came up with this word it means the Emcee earns a few credits for the success of the event. While making the preparations on one hand there could be variations in the recipe and on the other some ingredients are a strict NO
Let’s figure out…
Understand the Event
Every Event has its own variation, as an Emcee you have to learn the importance of the Event. Make sure that the vital points are highlighted while it’s being executed. It’s best to spend some time in learning. If you haven’t done a particular kind of event before, it’s always good to be honest with your client and yourself. Now this makes sense only when one spends time in research and practice where needed. The combination of being hard-working and Honest is totally worth it.
That does not mean you don’t take up something new. There will always be a first time, working on having the right understanding will certainly make your Event Emceelicious.
Know your Audience
Once the client puts trust in your work and hands over execution responsibilities it’s important to know the audience. The more of their attention you have the more you have control. Trust me that’s not easy. Different people different levels of interest. It’s not possible to satisfy everyone but it’s important to build a connection or a link with the majority.
What’s the age group of the audience?
What culture they follow?
Questions like these help to get an idea as in how to go about.
Even though the Emcee is someone the audience does not know, that quick introduction has to build a little bond to make sure the rest of the event is Emceelicious.
Confidence and Clarity
You can’t miss these two ingredients at all . So yes being an Emcee is only possible when one has the confidence. Building that is a skill to master when you spend time in preparation, the efforts made automatically shoot out the confidence aroma. Now Clarity this comes with effort and practice. It’s important to be clear with what you say there. Not just the speech but also the message conveyed should be precise and to the point so that everyone follows.
Well a simple example, if one misses on these two ingredients then it’s like missing the salt in the dish.
Dress to Impress
For different people different dressing styles. It’s important to dress as per the occasion. A formal event calls for the formal attire, a casual one looks for the change accordingly. Some events are a cultural affair. When an Emcee goes out of the way to dress as per the theme or a particular culture the effort is noticed and one never fails to impress the client and the audience as well. Well whatever you decide to wear keep it decent and with the other accessories don’t forget to wear the smile.
There can be no Emceelicious event without wearing a smile.
Accept Surprises
You have made the required preparations
You dressed well all set to take on the mic…
The Event has started and everything is flowing smoothly.
Suddenly……..oops
Well here comes the Surprise.
Now even though surprises are not always pleasant the Emcee has to take it with a smile .If it’s a technical mishap one has to make sure nothing is obvious and if it somehow is, go ahead and lighten the mood, cover it up .
Sometimes the next step in the flow is facing delay. It’s okay to get to the mic and create the magic with a conversation or some activity.
Some surprises are funny,
Some reactions could be completely unexpected.
You have a time deadline to stick to and here is some extra stuff happening,
Relax and just tell yourself “it’s okay”.
Panic is a big No Ingredient
The Emcee who manages everything and makes it seem flawless no matter what and has managed to get this dish (Event) on the table perfectly.
then
And after the meal the audience reacts and says …
“Well well we had a nice time, and this Event is indeed Emceelicious…!”
