Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), is a technical standard for remote desktop access. There are many protocols that can be used to remotely access desktop software, such as RDP, Independent Computing Architecture, (ICA), or virtual network computing (VNC), however RDP is the most widely used protocol. RDP was originally released by Microsoft. It is compatible with most Windows operating systems. However, it can also be used with Mac operating system.

What does 'remote desktop' mean?

Remote desktop allows you to connect to and use a distant desktop computer from another computer. Remote desktop users have the ability to access their desktop and open, edit, and use their applications just like they are sitting at their computer. Remote desktop software is often used by employees to access work computers while they're away or at home.

Remote desktop access is different to cloud computing even though both allow employees remote work. Cloud computing allows users to access files and apps that are stored in the cloud, specifically in cloud servers. Remote desktop software allows users to access their desktop computer. However, they cannot use any files or applications stored locally. Although cloud computing can be easier and more cost-effective for remote workers, many companies are unable to migrate to the cloud for security or regulatory reasons.

What is RDP?

Imagine a remote-controlled drone, or toy car. The remote user controls the car or drone by pressing buttons. Their commands are then transmitted to it. Buy Cheap Rdp works in a similar way. The user's mouse movements, keystrokes and keyboard inputs are sent to their computer via the Internet. As if they were actually sitting in front of the computer, their desktop is displayed on that computer.

RDP protocol creates a dedicated network channel to send data back and forth between connected machines (the remote desktop, and the current computer in use). This protocol uses network port 3389 to send data. This channel is used to send all data via IP, which the most common transport protocol for Internet traffic. RDP encrypts all data to make connections over the Internet more secure.

There are often slight delays due to keyboard and mouse activity being encrypted and transmitted over Internet. If a user double-clicks an application to open it to their desktop, the "double click” may not occur for a few seconds as the action of the user is transmitted to the desktop. After the application is opened, there might be a short delay as the display is transmitted back.

What are the pros and disadvantages of RDP?

RDP has many advantages. It doesn't require a VPN. It secures data on the user’s desktop and not on cloud servers or user's unencrypted personal devices. RDP allows companies with an existing IT infrastructure to let their employees work remotely.

RDP can cause users to experience lag if they have a slow Internet connection. This can cause frustration for remote workers and reduce their productivity. RDP is also vulnerable to cyber attacks. ( Find out more about RDP security.

Cloudflare can help RDP accelerate and be secured.

Cloudflare spectrum decreases network latency due to long-distance RDP connections, and other network problems. Cloudflare reduces connection times and network latency to provide a better user experience. Cloudflare also uses Argo tunnel to block unauthorized port 3389 connection making RDP safer.

The Cloudflare product suite also helps to keep remote teams productive and secure. Companies can now use Cloudflare Access credentials to validate sessions by placing RDP-connected assets behind Cloudflare.
