Home water purification is big business these days. There are many ways to purify your drinking water. The only problem is figuring out which method is the best for your needs. It's not all about removing chemicals and organic chemicals from it. In fact, distillation isn't really that good at removing most of the contaminants that are in tap water.

Water distillers remove trace minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium. These are minerals that are important to our health. Distilled water supply has a natural mineral flavor to it. It does have a higher concentration of minerals than spring or well water so it has a unique mineral flavor. But the low concentration of minerals in distilled water supply can cause problems in the long run.

You may have noticed that some things taste different after you have run your water tested. You may have noticed that certain chemicals seem to have a different taste as well. Some people believe that it is because the minerals have been removed by the process. This is one of the reasons that people have started looking into the process of removing impurities from their water supply.

The removal of minerals can affect the taste of the water though. If you don't have enough of the minerals in your water filtration system then you will notice that it doesn't taste that great. The same thing applies if you have too much of one mineral. If you run your water supply through a reverse osmosis step you will eliminate the trace minerals that are beneficial to your health. If this step is not performed by your home water filters, then you will be removing potentially healthy chemicals as well. So it is important to know which steps your system takes before you purchase one.

Some of the chemicals that can be found in home water filtration systems are chlorine, THMs, VOCs, lead, cysts and bacteria. It is important to realize that some of these chemicals can actually cause cancer. Lead can cause learning disabilities and behavioral problems in children. There is no safe level of exposure to these types of toxins. They are not good for you and they should not be present in your drinking water.

There are other options such as distillation or reverse osmosis. They do remove some of the contaminants but not all of them. In order for your water supply to be healthy you need to make sure that the chemicals, pesticides and parasites are all removed. So, make sure that you get a multi-stage system that includes both reverse osmosis and distillation to give you the safest, cleanest water possible.
