Solo: A Star Wars Story was released in the year 2018 with high expectations and budget of 275 million US dollars. But the movie did not even manage to do a decent job at the box office and managed to collect a meager 393.2 million US dollars across the globe which the makers did not expect from a movie belonging to the Star Wars series. The producers had to drop any possibility of a sequel/prequel even though they had a signed contract with the actor, Alden Ehrenreich, for two more projects in the future. The makers rightly thought that there was no point of furthering the plot if the people did not feel connected or captivated by it. But like it often happens, the movie was appreciated much later. When the fans realized that the movie was good and deserved a part-two, the hashtag #MakeSolo2Happen began trending on Twitter.
It motivated the production to give it another shot since the hashtag hinted to an excited fanbase ready to receive Solo again. The lead actor of the movie Alden Ehrenreich has dropped subtle clues that his part in Star Wars as the youthful crook is not over yet. Ehrenreich did not intend to disclose any further details but several sources have reported that a continuation series may be under construction for the online streaming platform Disney+. But this cannot be confirmed in any way since officials or representatives of Disney+ have not made any official statements yet.
The only dependable source of information at present is remarks from Alden that indicate that he is aware of some conversation regarding recreating Han Solo but not on the big screens of theatres. There have also been floating rumors of Donald Glover taking up the role of Younger Lando Calrissian in the possible Disney+ series. The 2018 movie about Han discussed the foundation of the character who abandoned the Imperial Starfleet and became a sniper with a generous and kind nature. After the impressive success received by ‘The Mandalorian’ and announcement for a subsequent part to the show, Disney+ subscribers are in the optimal zone to receive a standalone show about Solo.
Making a series instead of a high budget movie will be a smart and financially viable move for Disney+ because it is possible to complete the production of a web series at a lower budget. Hence, even if the show does not do very well, the losses will not be as colossal, the platform also stands to make a profit. But on the other hand, since Solo: A Star Wars Story was one of the most unexpected and biggest losses faced by Disney so far, it will be justifiable if the producers are apprehensive about the project. A few hashtags and some fans’ requests may not be a motivation big enough for them to start considering an investment in the project again, given the previous results.
