The essence of the sight of this statue is as pure as the Buddha himself, sitting in his dhyan asana with left hand on the feet holding a Putra (begging bowl) symbolizing that he is the head of a monastic order and right hand held up in vitarka Mudra forms a circle with the index finger and thumb, as a sign of ‘wheel of law’. Mounted on a black, two-layered plinth, he wears a dark copper-brown colored shiny robe with a stylish border covering his body in ease.

The idea that all things are transient is central to Buddhist teaching. Loss and impermanence are things to be accepted rather than causes of grief. The Buddha’s Parinirvana was a moment of great triumph as well as sorrow, for it marked the Buddha’s release from the cycle of rebirth. This wood statue of Buddha depicts the Parinirvana in a highly abbreviated, almost emblematic fashion. The enlightened one, reclining on a rectangular base with turned or carved legs, fills the foreground with his halo headrest on his right hand and his left hand is covered by his robe.

The Buddha contains multitudes. The life of a prince of the Shakya clan that could not prevent him from turning to mendicancy and asceticism; year after year of grave austerity and introspection; and, finally, enlightenment. It goes without saying that a life like this descends not into death as its natural course, but into nirvana: the elusive freedom from birth and death and rebirth that ensnare us all. The murti of the Buddha that you see on this page captures Him within moments of the great nirvana or the mahaparinirvana (‘maha’ is Sanskrit for great; ‘pari’, for that which comes after). He lies on one side, with the head gently propped upon the palm of the right hand (in which direction the body is turned in all mahaparinirvana iconography). He is clad in a robe of molten gold color - such is the quality of the brass make - from the folds of which His gentle hand and feet emerge in a contrasting inky color.
