Two young girls are seen immersed in the process of making a rangoli while their mother oversees the task, standing at the threshold of their house. From the black stone masonry and the ornament and attire of the lady, it can be deduced that this oil painting hails from the western state of Maharashtra. The outer walls of the house are constructed with black stones, used in buildings of Pune and surrounding areas. The mother, the central image in this painting is wearing a Marathi Paithani silk sari in bright reddish-orange color with a green pallu (end piece) adorned by two peacocks and traditional motifs drawn in a glittering gold shade. That she is married can be identified by her adornment- in the parting of her hair, we can see a single line of vermillion (an attribute of married Hindu women) and a red bindi (auspicious dot in red color) on her forehead.

N. Harichandan of Orissa is one of the artists who are capable of encapsulating abstract art in the most beautiful way. Abstract art is the use of shapes, colors, forms, and gestural marks to achieve the effect of visual reality. In this painting, the artist has encapsulated a labyrinth, mostly referred to as a maze which is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. In the modern world, it is a complicated irregular network of passages or paths in which it is difficult to find one's way.

The storm outside the bottle is an oil painting by artist Anup Gomay whose central motif could be interpreted as hope. Artist may have taken the inspiration from the British adverb 'Storm In a Teacup', which slightly matches the title of the painting. It is an English adverb that means a small event that has been exaggerated out of proportion. Such is the subject and portrayal of the painting that has been canvased. There are several houses inside a bottle that seem like the architecture inspiration has been taken from Europe. The cider color buildings are safe from the tempest that has been storming outside. There are two sandstone-colored trees inside the bottle that represents hope and dream.

Blessed by gods with many mystical capabilities which include the ability to expand and shrink in size and hold mighty powers once he was arrogant and mischievous. He could not be controlled until a group of sages cursed him to forget his powers. Hanuman is shown displaying these abilities when he was met humble Ram. His role as faithful messenger and servant to Vishnu’s avatar Rama has led Hanuman from being a semi-divine. Hindus have dedicated countless pieces of art to the monkey god depicting Hanuman’s bravery, strength, and supernatural powers. This may be what led people to worship him as they do, but Hanuman is more than power. God of wisdom, strength, courage, devotion, and self-discipline. He is devotional, loyal, and servile of his friend Rama. Vitthal das almost give this oil painting an allusion to Tanjore style.

Perfect shades of vibrant colors and the sharp beauty of lord Ganesha, who stands in his nritya (dance) posture on a high pedestal decorated with lotus petals at the top and two multi-wick diyas of devotion on either side, majorly enhance picturesque aspects of this oil painting. The oval aureole bordered with full-grown multicolored flowers enhances the auspiciousness of this elephant god; garbed in heavenly colors of yellow dhoti, royal blue stole hung on his hands with the contrasting pink kamarband that falls in perfect pleats with the zaried antique borders; embellished in ancient yet modernly designed real jewels and the richly carved royal crown that glorifies on his head.

The simhavahini Devi Durga is a sight to behold. She is a powerful feminine presence, born to annihilate adharma at the very root. She fulfills a purpose that is beyond the scope of the entire Hindu deva pantheon, Mahishasuravadha, or the slaying (‘vadha’) of the buffalo-demon (Mahishasura). She is as strong as She is beautiful, as invincible as She is fair, as omnipotent as She is nariroopa (womanly manifestation).

This brilliant painting, oil on canvas, as large as four by six feet, rendered in modern art style but with a mythical theme, represents the ten-armed Devi – Goddess, killing the buffalo demon Mahisha, better known as Mahishasura. The goddess is attended on her right by goddess Lakshmi carrying a lotus in her right hand, and a pot of gems, in her left, and on her left, by goddess Saraswati carrying in her right hand a lotus bud, and in her left, her usual ‘vina’ – stringed musical instrument. Though while the gold complexioned Lakshmi is attired in pinkish mauve ‘sari’ and blue complexioned Saraswati, in light green, in their overall adornment – style of crowns, garlands of fresh flowers, and other ornaments, the two figures are almost identical.

Of all the different layers of concentration expounded in the yogasootras, it is the seeded kind that is aided by visualisation imagery. By seeded, Maharshi Patanjali meant the state of the mind that still contains the singular remnant of a dying impression (sanskara). The abstract oil painting that you see on this page is a visualisation aid designed to propel the mind of the yogi towards seeded samadhi. It is a fine mix of solid pastel tones blending into a vortex at the Bindu (dot) in the center. It is an absorbing scarlet color, surrounded by white and gold and earthier greens, blues, and browns. The brushstrokes that make up the multitude of colors in the vortex are extended upwards into panels of aquamarine blue and the color of fire. This is the most striking aspect of the composition.
