You can apply for the Essential Skills Work Visa if you have a job offer from a New Zealand employer and the necessary qualifications and experience to work in that job. In most cases, however, your employer must have done a labor market test to see if any New Zealanders were available to do the job before offering you the job.

Assume you've received an offer for a job in one of the Essential Skills in Demand Lists, and your qualifications and experience are a suitable fit. Your employer will not be obliged to perform the labor market test or provide evidence of attempts to hire New Zealanders in that case.

The duration of this visa is usually determined by how long you've been offered employment and if you'll be paid less than or more than the median wage. You may be eligible for a three-year visa if your wages are equivalent to or higher than the NZ median wage. If you want to stay in New Zealand for a longer time, you may be able to apply for another Essential skill work visa.

Starting July 27, 2020, you can support visitor visas for partners, visitor or student visas for dependant children on an Essential Skills visa if your income meets the requirements. If you are paid at or above the median wage, you can also support a work visa for your partner.

This visa does not allow self-employment, but it does allow you to study for up to three months in any 12 months, or to complete any studies required by your job. You may be able to earn enough points to qualify for a Residence Visa under the Skilled Migrant Category if you have an Essential Skills work visa for a skilled job.
