Since the first phone with 5G technology was released around 2 years ago in the United States, there have been many changes. Sprint and T-Mobile have merged, with promises to increase coverage for 5G for rural America.  Verizon invested a staggering amount of money in the auction for C-band to fund its plans to build a 5G network. In addition, dish Network is now in the beginning stages of constructing an all-green unlimited wireless internet 5G network across the country. The cable companies are planning to create regional networks for 5G. The sector is on the close of receiving billions of dollars in federal aid to build broadband connections in remote America. Most of the funds will be used to build fixed-line broadband networks, but 5G will play a crucial role. In this report, we examine the situation of 5G. In this case, rural America will enjoy real-time high-speed 5G and the opportunities for rural operators once 5G becomes available. U.S. 5G coverage has progressed significantly over the last few months.  According to Opensignal, which specializes in mobile network analytics, 5G coverage has grown worldwide.

The government is proposing to fund it.

The Biden administration's $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan contains $100 billion in broadband construction in under-served and inaccessible areas.  In conjunction with existing broadband programs offered by the federal government, the funding will provide greater than 120 billion to construct new networks. This will help in closing the digital gap. In addition, the proposal focuses on spending for government-run or non-profit networks. The White House explains that those companies have "less pressure to turn profits" and "a commitment to serving entire communities." However, Republicans have recently released a counter-proposal that reduces the total amount to $568 billion and broadband at $65 billion.  As of now, it's unclear what amount of money will be available and who is eligible for it, but there is widespread support across the political spectrum for bridging the digital gap. Fixed-line broadband networks are expected to receive the highest percentage of financial backing. But 5G networks will play a role, especially in extreme-cost, reduced-population-density areas. To allow rural America to enjoy the benefits of 5G's high-speed networks, they need to be operating on the mid-band spectrum.  It is the case that FCC has recently released a vast area of mid-band spectrum, the Citizens Broadband Radio Service band accessible for non-licensed use.  The band was offered in small portions in licenses for rural users to pay for. Its Citizens Broadband Radio Service band and the rural expansion offered by national operators with T-Mobile are the ones that have been most involved in intriguing possibilities.

Networks private, Managed services expand

As the cost and technical obstacles decrease, a growing number of big companies are setting up secure wireless networks. These custom-built wireless networks could provide many of the advantages of efficiency, automation, and security 5G offers. Rural operators designing the infrastructure and running private networks with 5G could provide a new opportunity for business. For example, 5G private networks can help an animal rancher keep track of herd health in real-time, allowing them to be proactive in their efforts to provide medical treatment.

Conclusion

The coverage of 5G has dramatically increased over the last few quarters. We expect Verizon to utilize its C-band network in the second quarter of this year to take the accelerator to the floor. However, those C-band deployments are likely to be restricted to suburban and urban markets shortly. T-Mobile seems to be achieving its 5G rural fixed-wireless-coverage commitments, but the speeds are significantly slower than what's being offered in urban markets.  Nevertheless, a windfall from government broadband assistance could create the potential for rural wireless providers to expand their networks or utilize managed services should government-owned and non-profits be granted priority funding. Long-term rural operators are ideally placed to provide fiber backhaul and tower leasing services to the 5G network in the rural areas of America; however, if national operators see Low Earth Orbiting satellite networks as a viable broadband option and accelerate their plans for 5G.
