Doors are an essential part of the building. Its main function is to serve as a connecting link between the inside and outside of your building and allow free movement to the outside of the building. Also, doors are helpful to maintain privacy and safety inside the home when it is closed properly. People like to spend more amount on their home front door because it is the one which adds extra beauty to the home and gains a lot of attention from the visitors.

Removing the Old Door:

When you are planning to replace your interior door with a pre-hung door, the first thing you need to do is to remove the existing interior door and its frame. Start removing the hinge pins with the help of a screwdriver and hammer. Then remove the door from its frame and remove the hinge and strike plates from the door frame. Then loosen the trim with a stiff putty knife and use a pry bar and block of wood to remove the trim without making any damage to the wall. If the trim is in good shape, you can reuse it with another door.

Positioning the New Door:

Once the old door is removed properly and prepared the doorway, then you start the process for Interior Doors Installation. Slide the prehung door into the opening and put the door in the place and slide it until the jamb is flush with the wall. Make sure that the door opens in the desired direction and location.

Adding the Shims:

After positioning the doors, use a level to check that the door is kept straight. Add shims to adjust the level and ensure that the jamb is plumb. Make sure the door frame should be slightly smaller than the opening it fits to allow for some adjustments. Shim between the side jambs and the studs in order to fill the spaces between them. After positioning the shims on the hinges and studs, again re-check the level of the door.

Nail Door Frames to the Studs:

Drive the nails through the frame along with the shims into the studs. Drive the two nails through each shim about an inch from each edge of the jamb with one about half an inch above the other. Before you start driving the nails, open and close the door in order to make any necessary adjustments. When you are satisfied with the performance of the door, then drive and set the nails.

Install the Door Trim:

Drive the finishing nails through the trim and into the studs behind the walls. Trim the exposed shims by scoring them with the knife. Cut and install the trim on another side of the door in the same manner as done on the first side.

Conclusion:

Once you are done with the above steps, attach the backplates and the door knobs. Make sure not to tight screw the knobs in order to avoid any damage. From the above, you can easily get a piece detailed knowledge about replacing your old interior door with a prehung door.
