Left a desolate ruin after a terrible cataclysm, the city of Neverwinter now rises from the ashes to reclaim its title as the Jewel of the North. Yet even as its citizens return and rebuild, hidden forces pursue their own goals and vendettas any one of which could tear the city apart. If Neverwinter is to survive, it is up to heroes to face down secret cults, sinister necromancers, would be kings, and the terrible monsters stirring beneath the city.

This supplement for the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS roleplaying game explores the Neverwinter region, providing details for both players and Dungeon Masters to experience everything the setting has to offer. Players can use this book to enhance their adventurers with exciting options that tie into the setting. They can choose from new character themes, cleric domains and powers, a new type of wizard called the bladesinger, and variants for classic races such as dwarves and elves.

Neverwinter makes excellent use of the Character Themes mechanics that were introduced in the Dark Sun campaign setting. The concept behind the themes adding a very slight boost to character power whilst providing a campaign role and background, works exceptionally well in this book, especially as the designers have selected thirteen interesting backgrounds.

As with most MMORPGs, gameplay revolves around playing a character created by the player in an open world. Neverwinter has a strong storyline. In order to advance that storyline, most of the action takes place in instanced areas which can be open outdoor locations, dungeons, caves, sewers, crypts etc. There are large open world locations where players compete with each other for contests and spawning monsters. Neverwinter Campaign Setting is a supplement for the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Many people first impression of the city was from the Neverwinter Nights games of the early 2000s. Because the game came out after the 3rd edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, and the 4th edition book had little to say about it, it took nearly a decade for fans to get a book to be made about this fan-favourite part of Faerun. In many ways, it is a pre-cursor to the 5th edition Adventure Paths, which set the various avenues of D&D's Intellectual Property on a shared trajectory. Neverwinter Campaign Setting was advertised alongside the MMO, board games, novels, Organized Play, and supplements in Dragon Magazine.
