One problem with agitators is that their position is on top of any vessel in the shaft, which can be an issue because it can move externally. This pro...

A seal is a fluid containing device. It keeps the fluid within a vessel where a rotating shaft passes through housing or where housing rotates around the shaft. Such vessels are mainly pumps, mixers, agitators, and other bulky machinery. The purpose of a mechanical seal is to allow the shaft to rotate freely without allowing large amounts of fluid to escape. A typical cutaway of a mechanical seal with a shaft passes through its center. However, this seal differs from the mechanical seal as it comes in two separate pieces. Unlike an ordinary cartridge mechanical seal, these two pieces of seals can be installed or removed from around a shaft without disassembling the whole equipment. When joined, the sealing elements are mated to create a proper and strong seal around the shaft. The split seals are a hassle-free and a robust option at the same time.
Where to use spilt seals-
These applications benefit from split seals as the equipment they are installed in requires huge amounts of time for disassembly. The use of splits in such applications saves installation time, reduces sleeve wear, increases equipment reliability, and reduces maintenance costs. The increase in the initial cost for split mechanical seals calls for implementing them in the system when savings from the above-mentioned benefits outweigh the increase in initial costing. In most cases, the savings can be significant.
Where to avoid split seals-
These seals are not recommended for applications in which potential emissions or leakage may become a threat to company personnel or the environment. Due to the way split, mechanical seals are constructed, they have an increased amount of potential leak paths. Use the split seals at the right place and they will work wonders.
