He does take a liking to her eldest, Jane, while Elizabeth, the next eldest, clashes with Mr. Bingley’s snobbish friend, Mr. Darcy. At first, Elizabeth finds Mr. Darcy to be arrogant and rude but later wonders if her first impression was the correct one. Jane Austen’s most popular novel whisks the reader back to 19th century England and into the mind of one of literature’s great heroines, Elizabeth Bennet. She was bright with a cutting wit when these were not common attributes of female characters, and shows real growth throughout the novel. There she has many bizarre and illogical adventures, having tea with a Mad Hatter and attracting the ire of the Queen of Hearts. This fanciful book is one of the most popular books in English-language fiction. A host of wonderful stories that came after—from Coraline by Neil Gaiman to the film Spirited Away—owe much of their inspiration to this delightful story. And like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the whimsy of those stories tends to appeal to adults just as much as children. What makes this novel unique is the fact that Ashlynn is not an innocent and instantly likable heroine—she has issues, and often acts selfishly.
