Looking at the architecture one can definitely say that Junagarh fort bikaner is an amalgamation of Rajput, Mughal, and Gujarati, western and revivalist Rajput styles of architecture. It comprises mahals, temples, official halls and private chambers, courtyards and gardens.
Junagarh fort is built from two red stones and yellow stones. The fort is a five storied building and has all facilities that one royal palace is expected to have. There are nine temples and shrines inside the premises. You also find beautiful gardens. There are stables for horses and Elephants .You will also see armouries and barracks to cater to the needs of the royal army.
Unlike other forts, Junagarh Fort was built on flat land. The fort has two entrances with seven gates. Both of the entrances are two-storeyed high and are equipped with iron spikes to add safety to the fort.
The fort has beautiful winding pathways and also many staircases with numerous doors. One of the intriguing features of the fort is that the structure has many pillars and porches. One can see various corridors and balconies with adjoining doors and windows. Since Bikaner is very hot in summers and it was very difficult to survive in such scorching heat at that time, the royals had their own arrangements to tackle it. The construction of the room was done differently. The room had a double roof which was made of an ornate wooden ceiling which had another concrete ceiling above it.
To add a beauty to the room and balance the lighting in the whole space of the room the walls had intricately carved niches for candles and lamps. Also to brighten up the room, mirrors and coloured glass were embedded on the walls of the room. So that light from the lamps is reflected and the whole room brightens up. Several other details like small windows, balconies, a ramp that lead to the fort theses all add to the beauty of the junagarh kila. One will get mesmerized with the architecture of the Junagarh fort and will remember it for its distinct style of architecture!
