As part of ongoing initiatives by the general chiropractic community in Australia to further integrate the practice into mainstream healthcare, a new study is being conducted to find out whether or not chiropractic fits into modern models of care.
The study is being conducted by Macquarie University researchers at the Department of Chiropractic and is being funded by the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) scheme. Out of the scheme’s $20 billion long term healthcare investment, $2.1 million is being dedicated to the chiropractic study - a first in the industry.
The study will be led by Professor Simon French who is the Deputy Head of Department and Director of Research at the Department of Chiropractic (Macquarie University). Professor Mark Hancock from the Department of Health Professions will also be leading the study.
The study will examine whether a new model of care - specifically one which integrates chiropractors (such as Chiropractors in Avalon.) and physiotherapists into a primary healthcare team - will improve the overall experience for people living with lower back pain. The study will work with 20 healthcare clinics. 10 of which will work with an additional musculoskeletal clinician, while the other 10 will continue with their normal operations.
The role of musculoskeletal clinicians in the study is to best manage their patient’s pain and conditions while also working in cooperation with traditional western medicine practitioners in the same clinic.
If it is found that having an additional musculoskeletal clinician improves the overall experience of visiting parties with lower back pain, then the new model of care will be proposed to relevant health departments. The new model of care will also aim to streamline referral processes between general practitioners and musculoskeletal clinicians.
The study is expected to continue for four years and will be in cooperation with the Australian Chiropractors Association.

Are you spending many hours each day stationary in front of your computer? Do you find yourself sedentary while working or even during your personal leisure time? Remember to maintain high levels of physical activity as otherwise, you may be suffering from musculoskeletal disorders in the future.
Musculoskeletal health disorders are becoming more and more common in today’s screen-focused climate, and there are a particular few you should be wary of. We’ll detail these for you below in this blog.
Epicondylitis
Epicondylitis or more commonly referred to as golfer’s elbow is a type of tendonitis which is experienced in the elbow. It is located in the tendons connecting the bony part of the elbow to the forearm muscle, and can cause individuals to feel pain, irritation or general discomfort around the affected area. Individuals who constantly use their arms or elbow (or place repeated stress onto them) should be wary of developing epicondylitis in the future.
Tension neck syndrome
As the name implies, tension neck syndrome is experienced in the neck. Those who suffer from tension neck syndrome may feel pain, tenderness and/or stiffness in their neck. In more serious cases, tension neck syndrome may also cause individuals to become fatigued or suffer from headaches. In order to diagnose tension neck syndrome and treat it with directed stretches, individuals should visit a professional health practitioner.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is common amongst individuals who use their fingers and hands frequently in a stationary position (for example when typing or playing an instrument). Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the medium nerve along the hand and wrist, which consequently results in numbness, tingling and/or weakness in the fingers, hands and arms. If you are constantly typing without rest, or are generally using your hands for a long period of time in a stationary position, make sure to take the necessary precautions to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome from developing.
