When Smokegears shared their 15 Best BBQ in Nashville list, it was no surprise that Edley’s Bar-B-Que was at the top of the list. The article stated: “The city (Nashville) is rapidly rising through the ranks of the cities with the best BBQ spots in the country.” Edley’s Bar-B-Que is making a name for itself among BBQ franchises.
Let’s find out why!
Defining Nashville Style Barbeque

Not Just Any Old BBQ Franchise
Edley’s Bar-B-Que is Defining “Nashville Style BBQ”
The city has some great BBQ joints. But some BBQ aficionados think that unlike Texas and Memphis, Nashville does not have a history of being a barbecue town. Moreover, they think that Nashville doesn’t have a signature BBQ style like Memphis-style meat or Texas-style brisket.
Edley’s Bar-B-Que founders Catherine and Will Newman aim to fix that notion. After more than a decade in their original Nashville and Chattanooga locations, their first BBQ restaurant franchise opened in Glen Carbon, Illinois. And their Nashville style BBQ franchises are expanding throughout the Southeast and Midwest.
Restaurateur Will Newman Puts New Spin on Old Traditions with Nashville Style
Chain
“From Kansas City to the Carolinas, America has a wide variety of barbecue styles. For restaurateur Will Newman, his specialty is in ‘Nashville style,’ which is what he's cooking up at the four locations of Edley's Bar-B-Que. Newman named the restaurant chain after his grandfather, and Thrillist considers the spot among the best in the city.”
This is a direct quote from the interview
In a recent televised interview on The Dish: CBS This Morning, Founder Will Newman is interviewed about his “Nashville Style” BBQ.
In the CBS feature, Edley’s Bar-B-Que is called “one of the music city’s most beloved down-home eateries, a place where locals come with their children and dogs – looking for that Southern goodness that makes this place unique.”
Nashville BBQ Franchises Style are at the Heart of Edley’s Bar-B-Que
What is this “Southern goodness that makes (his BBQ) unique?” Newman tells CBS how he develops Edley’s Bar-B-Que’s distinctive smoky flavor:
The star of the table, the meat, has thoroughly been through the smoker. Newman explains, “In the South, BBQ means smoking our meat. It takes a 12-hour process to smoke our meats – we start tonight for the meat we’ll be serving tomorrow. Smoking just infuses a flavor that is so distinct. You’re bringing in the flavor of the wood; it enriches the flavor of the meat. We wanted to infuse that down home feeling of Nashville in our barbecue. The code to good BBQ is, it has to be very humble. The meat speaks for itself,” says Newman.
The other flavors come from the seasoning. For instance, “we have our own hot chicken rub. Take the punishment,” Newman urges. “The way we create this, (you) typically find the heat on your tongue or the lips and it builds with each bite. The first bite is very approachable. Then it builds up on your tongue. Then the lips. Until too long, the sweat builds up on my bald head,” he laughs.
And that’s how Edley’s Bar-B-Que has created their distinctive Nashville Style BBQ franchise. “If you’re born in Memphis, there’s just something stamped in your DNA that’s barbecue,” notes Newman.
Meat Plus Three: A Southern Tradition
Another element of that Southern goodness is the sides. “As for the sides,” quips Newman, “they’re given as much attention as the meat. We went (with) very high-quality ingredients on the mac – for instance, we use a gouda base on our mac and cheese.”
According to Thrillist, “Edley’s Bar-B-Que is pretty much the perfect combination of BBQ and the Southern tradition of meat and three*…and if you think there’s nothing new left to discover in the world of ’cue, Edley’s Bar-B-Que has worked to make their innovative Nashville Hot BBQ a thing, and it is! Sides are made daily, ranging from eight to 10 choices of secret family recipes.”
Nashville BBQ aficionado Bill Cavendish sums it up best: “Give proper respect to the place that will let you have banana pudding as a side item,” he says of Edley’s Bar-B-Que.
*Meat Plus Three (or “Meat ’n Three”) is popular throughout the United States, but its roots can be traced to Tennessee and its capital of Nashville. The phrase has been described in Wikipedia as implying “glorious vittles served with utmost informality.” It is also associated with soul food.
If you want your new BBQ restaurant franchise to be authentically Southern, look for a business that offers Meat ’n Three.
Authentically Southern Drinks: Bourbon, Plus BBQ
“No visit to Edley’s would be complete without a sip of the Bushwacker,” according to CBS. Newman sums it up: “Think of it as an adult version of a frosty, but all kinds of goodness is added to it. Lots of rum, crème de cocoa, coffee liquor, some milk and 151. Bushwacker is our staple; people come from all over for it,” adds Newman. The drink is so popular, Edley’s Bar-B-Que serves it out of a machine.
Not Just Any Old BBQ Franchise

The word on the street is that a bar for sale is big business these days. Friends, food, entertainment and fun add up to a winning combination for keen investors with an eye for a rewarding and financially attractive enterprise.
The classic bar and grill industry generates nearly $26 billion in revenue a year. In Ohio alone, more than 22,547 eating and drinking establishments are a driving force in the state’s economy. They play a vital role in local communities and offer opportunities for people like you who want to change their career path and boost their earning potential.
In today’s world, stepping up the game with a restaurant franchise that has a different twist is as important as ever. That’s why a bar for sale in Ohio like Submarine House Bar and Grill makes sense. Business-savvy entrepreneurs gravitate toward Submarine House franchises that offer the right combination of a fun atmosphere, innovative menu and full lineup of drink favorites that cater to every taste.
A bar franchise can help you live the life you want
Did you know that nearly half the dollars spent on alcoholic drinks are expected to be consumed outside the home, including in restaurants and bars, by 2023?
It makes sense when you consider that the neighborhood bar concept continues to reign as one of the most popular types of bars for sale. Add in the sports theme of a bar and grill franchise like Submarine House and the concept takes on a whole new level of interest for consumers and investors alike.
Today’s young adults prefer friendly, fun destinations where they can share experiences with friends and family. As a Submarine House owner, you can offer the right combination of good eats and sports-driven entertainment to establish the go-to destination in your neighborhood.
Put your flavor stamp on your bar franchise business
The craft beer boom has had its influence on casual dining destinations and bar franchises. Today’s beer lover won’t settle for “same-old-same-old” beer on tap or in a can.
Young adults – from millennials to Gen Zs – crave flavors and variety that offer just the right edge for any palate. That’s why young adults top the charts for the largest increase in craft beer consumption.
You have a chance to set your own style with a Submarine House franchise that lets you line up local brew choices along with the standard, consistent winners. The flexibility to select regional and local flavors signals a community-based focus – and a compelling reason to consider a bar franchise for sale in Ohio.
Set up your bar franchise to be part of the craft beer movement
Soak up a little beer history to give your location an edge over the competition.
The craft brewing industry got its start in the 1960s and launched the popular niche that has grown dramatically since then. Today, more than 8,000 breweries produce more styles and brands than ever before in the U.S.
Many trace the craft brewing movement to California when Anchor Brewing Co. opened in 1965. By the mid-1970s, countless homebrewers learned the art of brewing and welcomed changes in state and federal laws that allowed commercial production.
Beer brewing grew in popularity with more than 100 breweries in operation by the mid-1980s. Ohio celebrated its first craft brewery in 1988 when Great Lakes Brewery opened.
Fast forward to the 1990s, and microbreweries multiplied ten-fold with production on the rise across the country. Today, the term “craft brew” includes new products that don’t fit the traditional definition of beer.
A Bar for Sale that Leverages an Effective, Established Business Model
Local craft beers are at the heart of Submarine House. Franchise owners are always scouting for the best brews to add to their bar lineup. It’s a time-tested way to keep fans coming back to discover a new flavor or style at your pub.
Along with the fully stocked bar in your Submarine House franchise, you can tap into a playbook for growth that starts with a reasonable investment and a full listing of potential revenue streams.
It takes a total investment of $606,700 to $1,077,700 to get your start as a Submarine House bar franchise owner. That’s highly competitive in today’s bar and grill franchise industry.
The Submarine House lunch and dinner menus serve up the best Philly cheesesteak in town, grilled sandwiches and subs, pizzas and salads, and other fan favorites.
Beyond craft beers, the fully stocked bar includes specialty drinks and on-tap favorites.
Special offerings – from Ladies’ Night and drink specials to 10 Items After 10 PM – keep loyal customers coming back for more.

In the fast casual restaurant arena, offering the chance to discover regional American tastes is one way to appeal to customers seeking easy access to a flavor-packed experience—much like one can find at The Red Chickz, a hot new chicken franchise concept with its roots in Nashville. Thinking about traditional American food flavors in the U.S., a list of unique local classics might turn up items like Buffalo wings or Southern fried chicken. Luckily, the franchising industry makes it possible to enjoy some regional fare in new locales.
In fact, you’re likely to find many options related to chicken when looking into restaurant franchise opportunities—especially wings and fried chicken. Then, if you look a little deeper into the full flavor factor, you may find yourself drawn to a hot chicken franchise. This fast casual idea leverages the love for a special coating known as “Nashville hot,” and is proudly connected to authentic chicken recipes from Tennessee. As a menu item, Nashville hot chicken is music to the ears of spicy food lovers at The Red Chickz original California location. And now diners can sing its praises across other states, too, with its Nashville hot chicken franchise opportunity.
The Nashville hot chicken style began to break out as a national food trend a few years ago, as restaurants, food bloggers and more started catching on to that rising appeal. The Red Chickz, which opened its first restaurant in Los Angeles in 2018, has been serving delicious sandwiches and other menu options—and posting hot content on Instagram and Tik Tok—ever since. Their delectable images of mouth-watering food has helped them gain more than 840,000 followers on social media. As the saying goes, first we eat with our eyes, and this Nashville hot chicken franchise knows how to capture visual attention and pay it off with a treat for the taste buds.
Fortunately, food trend reports in the industry show that Nashville hot continues to heat up as an emerging craze. The Grub Hub annual State of the Plate reports a 327% rise in popularity in the first half of 2021 alone, a stat which presents plenty of potential spark for a hot new chicken franchise.
How Fried Chicken and Wings Ignite a Hot Chicken Franchise
Would you be surprised to find out that fried chicken in some form appears on 95% of all restaurant menus nationwide? Now, by taking the spicy fried chicken sandwich to a new level with its Nashville hot chicken franchise, The Red Chickz is able to cater to heat-seeking diner demands with its own twist on the traditionally Southern recipes.
Beyond the consumer market for flavorful chicken and wings, franchise owners and operators are deciding to bet on chicken’s popularity as they strive to create flavor concepts the market can sink its teeth into. The forecast for the fast casual chicken franchise in America shows an increase by more than 12% in 2021.
So, with the chicken trend on fire, get your cool drink of water ready to go with the heavenly heat of The Red Chickz Nashville hot chicken franchise. Perhaps you’re wondering how to get started, or how much investment in this Nashville hot chicken franchise costs? Owner and founder Shawn Lalehzarian states in this QSR Magazine article, “We are looking for passionate people who are interested in opening their own hot chicken franchise,” and shares that the initial investment necessary to open a single location ranges between $363,500 and $821,400.
A Fast Casual Inferno in a Hot Chicken Franchise
Aside from a positive industry outlook, entrepreneurs researching restaurant concepts might want to consider more than market potential, to also seek something fresh and differentiated. For instance, how does the brand promote its flavor profiles, present its ingredients, or prepare its products?
A focus on quick service and consistent quality is a great place to start when evaluating an opportunity in the food and beverage space. For fast, fresh chicken sandwiches and wings flavored the way customers want them, The Red Chickz makes their Nashville hot chicken to order. Customers are able to choose from six different heat levels ranging from Cool to Inferno on the menu’s clever scale in the form of a hot chili . That means that the saucy, spicy entrees can be enjoyed by customers with various heat tolerance levels.
And, with The Red Chickz, menu items go beyond the love of fried chicken and chicken wings, to also include chicken tenders and even shrimp, which can be tossed in the same Nashville hot spices.
A Nashville Hot Chicken Franchise Can Tempt the Tastes of Many
With a concept like The Red Chickz, it’s important to know that the signature flavors are transferred to hot chicken franchise owners from recipes that have already been tested and established by the original business. Before The Red Chickz first L.A. location was being developed, Lalehzarian travelled to Tennessee and discovered favorite recipes to serve as inspiration for The Red Chickz proprietary taste. He also realized the value of satisfying many diners’ tastes by simple variations in serving style of menu items, even beyond the heat level index.
An excellent example is The Red Chickz option to turn hot chicken or hot shrimp into a taco. Or, how about combining Southern food trends with the amazing Chickz N Waffles? That same approach to keeping it simple but making it special applies to menu items like potato wedges loaded with hot Chickz tenders. Or, if a diner isn’t into Nashville hot today, how about smoky hot with Chickz Chipotle sandwich? It’s made with the same quick and crispy cooking method, but offers another world of flavor to explore.
Specialty sides add another layer to diners’ selections, from the creamy slaw layered on the sandwiches, to the beloved “comeback sauce” for dipping wedges or tenders. Flavor is a highlight of this franchise brand—and an investment in flavor satisfaction is part of what can lead to ongoing customer loyalty to bolster the potential return from a Nashville hot chicken franchise cost and concept.
The Red Chickz was founded in California in 2018, gaining flocks of hungry diners at its L.A. location and opening a second in Culver City in 2021. With hundreds of thousands of fans on social media loving our mouth-watering menu and exclusive recipes, we’re set to join forces with the right franchise owners and share our passion for quality and fun. We’re growing The Red Chickz Nashville hot chicken franchise family to include locations in states like California, Arizona, Nevada, and Texas.
