Digital Marketing (or Online Marketing) is a set of marketing techniques that are executed in media and Internet channels.
It is about making the most of online resources and opportunities to promote a business or brand efficiently.
In other words, Digital Marketing is a system to sell products and services to a specific target that uses the Internet through online channels and tools in a strategic way and consistent with the company's general marketing strategy.
Webs, mobile applications, Social Networks, blogs, online search engines, Google advertising, social media advertising, email marketing, video platforms, forums, etc. All these channels are part of the world of Online Marketing. From the world of Web 2.0.
Digital Marketing has been applied since the 90s to transfer offline media techniques to the digital universe.
We go from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0
As is known, current Online Marketing is based on Web 2.0. But what is this Web 2.0 and how is it different from Web 1.0?
Let's see it.
In the beginning, Digital Marketing was based on Web 1.0, the web (understood as the broad set of the Internet), one-way. In other words, it did not distance itself from traditional offline media.
A company (or person) had a website as a showcase for their products. The transmitter emitted a message and the communication ended here. There was no bidirectionality. There was no online community.
However, in a few years the Internet revolution arrived and, thanks to a frenzied technological development, we arrived at Web 2.0. We come to Digital Marketing 2.0.
Web 2.0 is bi-directional. She is a creator of community. It is collaborative. The sender and receiver figures no longer exist: everyone can be both at the same time. Feedback is the great protagonist of Web 2.0.
With this fun video you will be very clear about the difference between Web 1.0 and 2.0:
Evolution of online marketing
With the popularization of the Internet, traditional marketing techniques adapted to the online environment. This is how digital marketing emerged, which evolves as rapidly as technology does.
Online marketing uses new media and channels to design strategies that help companies stand out on the Internet and attract more customers. Social media, business blogging, email marketing, Google advertising, and other media are just a few examples of digital marketing.
Therefore, digital marketing is the evolution of traditional marketing. From radio, television, or print ads we have moved on to online ads. From the letters with advertising that flooded our mailboxes, we have gone to email marketing. From live product presentations, we have moved on to webinars and YouTube videos.
The main difference (and advantage) is that new technologies allow us to design personalized marketing strategies. Analytical tools help us to get to know our target audience much better. Now we work with our ideal buyer person or client offering them exactly what they need when they need it throughout the sales funnel. We can even anticipate your future expectations.
Why? Because thanks to online marketing we know what online users do, how they behave on our website or electronic store, and what preferences they have.
So digital marketing is not just about selling more. It serves to sell better, optimizing to the maximum the resources that the internet offers us.
Online Marketing Channels
There are many online channels and tools where Digital Marketing strategies, techniques, and tactics that can be applied:
Web or blog: through content strategies, affiliate marketing, inbound marketing, etc.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM): online advertising campaigns, both on Social Networks, search engines or other websites, blogs, forums with banners or videos.
Video platforms: platforms like YouTube or Vimeo.
Advantages of Digital Marketing for your business
As I suppose you have already noticed, Digital Marketing has many advantages that traditional marketing does not have.
It is a safe bet to achieve further growth, improve positioning, and expand the spread of our communication.
Let's see the main advantages of Digital Marketing:
1. It is a universal medium
Digital marketing allows you to take your business anywhere on the planet. Never before has the internationalization of the company been so simple and so cheap. You can position your brand and your products or services without geographical or temporal limitations. It doesn't matter that you preside over a large corporation or have a small business.
2. It is segmentable
You have enormous possibilities of market segmentation to focus all efforts on the target audience you want to reach (and not a very high number as it happens with traditional media).
An offline marketing strategy does not have many segmentation possibilities. Apart from some decisions like choosing the TV channel or radio station and the time of your ad, you can't do much more.
Digital marketing allows you to target people of a certain age, with a specific level of education, specific lifestyle habits, and much more. The targeting capacity of the target audience is such that you can carry out different campaigns for each profile.
3. It is measurable It gives you full control over your campaigns in real-time. If it doesn't work, you can stop any campaign without having to spend the entire allocated budget. Think about your last campaign in a traditional medium. How many people did you reach? How many read your ad? Who contacted you thanks to that means? All these questions are difficult to answer with traditional marketing campaigns. With online marketing, you have numerous analytical tools that allow you to measure the success of your actions in great detail. For example, you will know who has entered your website, where it has come from, what sections it has visited, and how long it has been on your site.
4. It is less intrusive Surely you receive more than one telemarketing call that bothers you because it interferes with your activity. Digital marketing is not intrusive because users only click on an ad or open an email if they are interested. Otherwise, just ignore it. Also, thanks to segmentation, most people who see your campaigns will have searched for something related to your products or services, so the chances of conversion are greater. And without being heavy.
5. It is interactive Digital Marketing, especially if you use channels like social media, which allows you to create a community around your brand. Communication is essential to get to know your customers and your followers. Social media marketing is a very valuable tool to know what they think of you and how to improve your products or services. This direct feedback with the consumer extends to your customer service department, which will be of high quality and instantaneous, with access to the brand 24 hours a day.
6. It is cheaper The costs are much more affordable compared to traditional marketing channels. The wide variety of digital marketing channels and tools allows you to choose those strategies that best suit your budget. Content marketing, affiliate marketing, inbound marketing, social networks, email campaigns or SEO positioning are just some examples of strategies that you can use to increase your visibility and reputation on the Internet.
As you can see, Digital Marketing allows you to reach your target audience more economically and easily. It has essential channels, tools, and resources to improve a brand's communication strategy.
Before we say goodbye we would like to show you this infographic that summarizes what we have explained to you.
