Most parents that visit our dental clinic for kids are anxious and fearful before the child’s dental appointment. Many have used a visit to the dentist as a threat for your child. Some may have spoken of an unpleasant dental experience in front of the child. If you are guilty of any of the above, you have unknowingly caused your child to develop fear of dental treatment.
We, at The Maxfac Clinic feel it is important to make the child comfortable in the dental clinic and gain their confidence before doing any dental treatment. As parents and primary care givers, the involvement of parents in their child’s oral health is extremely important. This brings us to today’s topic of ‘whether or not parents should be present during their child’s dental treatment?’
Let’s understand the different scenarios that come up and why the dentist asks the parents to be around and when the dentist prefers the parent(s) to be out of the sight of the child. A lot also depends on the age and co-operation of the child. Read on to know more:
1. Consultation visit – Irrespective of the child’s age, it is best for the parent(s) to be around so as to understand the dental problems the child is facing and the treatment necessary for the same. It is in this visit that the dentist also takes a detailed history and will also demonstrate the correct oral hygiene techniques for your child.
2. Treatment visit – For children upto the age of 3-4 years, we seat the child in the parents lap for the treatment so that the child is more co-operative. For older children, depending on the child’s behaviour and response to treatment the dentist may or may not request the parent to step outside the sight of the child. There is no fixed rule regarding the parent being in the operatory during the treatment. The dentist will employ several behaviour management techniques to enable the child to co-operate through the treatment that may or may not require the parent to participate. Irrespective, we assure the parents that their child will be treated with a lot of tender love and care.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GET DENTAL BRACES
Crooked teeth? Bad bite? Want to get your teeth aligned perfectly, but don’t know enough about braces? Visit The Maxfac Clinic, an advanced dental clinic in Mumbai. Here’s some facts that you should know before you get braces…
• Who needs it? Anyone with teeth that are not in correct biting position. Braces can help adults too.
• What are the options? There’s the traditional metal braces, tooth coloured ceramic braces, lingual braces and invisible braces. Also, you have a wide range of funky coloured brackets and elastics to spruce up the smile.
• Is it painful? Yes, the initial couple of days after you get the braces fixed and tightened, you may experience a dull pain. But what’s a little pain if it leads to such a major gain?
• How long does the treatment take? Each patient’s treatment plan varies and so does the duration. The treatment may take anywhere between 4 to 18 months, based on individual bites. You need to see your braces doctor once every 4 to 6 weeks during this time span.
• Will I be able to eat everything? Your diet will need some modifications. You will need to stay clear of sticky foods. Hard foods like apples need not be eliminated; you simply need to chop in into smaller bits.
• Any special care to take before the treatment? It is always advisable to get your teeth professionally cleaned before going for braces. Extractions, cavities, root canals should be taken care of as well.
• Any special care to take during the treatment? Brushing and rinsing well is of prime importance. You will be prescribed special brushes to help you clean your teeth better. Also, patients who are into contact sports or athletics should get a mouth guard to protect their lips and cheeks from injury due to the braces.
• Any special care to take after the treatment? Depending on your individual case, you may need to wear retainers for life. These retainers are not visible when you smile and are very comfortable.
To clear any other doubts you may have contact our doctors at The Maxfac Clinic. We are an advanced dental clinic providing world class orthodontic care.

Think you need a smile makeover? Something to jazz up the smile? Make your teeth look brighter? Or maybe make them look longer? Or just change their shape? Well Cosmetic dentistry is the answer to all the above and a lot more. It can help improve your smile by correcting stained, chipped, broken, malposed, worn out teeth or teeth with gaps between them. It can also change the way your gums look. Cosmetic dentistry not only changes the way you smile, it also improves functions like speech and chewing. Some of the cosmetic dentistry options commonly available are described below.
Teeth whitening: Dental bleaching is a simple way to make your teeth look whiter and brighter.
Dental veneers: These are very thin shells of tooth coloured material that fit onto the front surfaces of your teeth like a mask. They require minimal trimming of the teeth but can give brilliant results.
Gum depigmentation: Another simple procedure to treat gums that are dark or black due to excessive pigmentation.
Gummy smile correction: Patients who have the problem of excessive gum show while smiling are candidates for this treatment. Metal free dental crowns: These crowns are made entirely of tooth coloured materials without a layer of underlying metal. Such crowns can replicate healthy natural teeth beautifully.
Cosmetic tooth replacement: Dental implants are the most aesthetic option available to replace one or more missing teeth. They are superior to other tooth replacement options such as dentures or bridges even in terms of function.
Closing gaps between teeth: This can be achieved by multiple methods. Addictive procedures such as composite restorations are one option. Laminates, veneers and crowns can also be used for the same.
Cosmetic teeth alignment: With the latest invisible braces now readily available, you can smile confidently even throughout your treatment!
Dental jewellery: It is now possible to adorn your smile with bonded tooth jewels.

A Pediatric and Preventive Dentist, more commonly known as a Pediatric Dentist or a Pedodontist, is a dental surgeon who has undergone special training in order to provide the best dental care to children. Pediatric dentists treat dental problem in children right from their birth until they grow into adolescents of age 14 years. They are also taught special skills to be able to deliver the best dental care to differently abled children as well as adults. Apart from specialized dental care for kids, they can also perform basic dental procedures like any other dental surgeon.
Pediatric Dentistry was developed as a separate branch because the dental status of children differs from that of adults in many ways. Depending on their age, children may have only milk teeth, only adult teeth or a combination of both in their mouths. Although milk teeth look similar to adult teeth, they require different treatments. Since the teeth of a child are still under developing stages, a Pediatric dentist is the right person to prevent the development of diseases and to identify early any conditions that may have begun developing. Hence they are also called Preventive Dentists. They are also trained in child psychology in order to be able to deal with their little patients in a friendly way. They are also trained to provide dental care to special needs patients such as those with Autism, Downs Syndrome etc. These patients need some extra tender love and care.
The right time to schedule your child’s first visit with a Pediatric Dentist would be immediately after birth. Your Pediatric Dentist will guide you about oral hygiene protocols fir the new born. The next visit should be as soon as his/her first tooth shows up in the mouth.
To consult our Pediatric Dentist, please get in touch with us at The Maxfac Clinic on +91 8879745345. We are a Super-Speciality Dental Clinic in South Mumbai, at Lamington Road.
