Whole Foods just made a sobering confession - The Motley Fool
The main brick and mortar grocery market is a low-margin industry driven by the need for a large volume just to make the end of the month. They face competition from companies like Walmart that like to choose high-volume items and sell them at low prices. Amazon, which is rapidly expanding its online grocery presence by offering a large selection, low prices, fast delivery and free shipping, and we all know that Amazon is happy to trade at a loss while expanding its grocery operations. Aldi, a German private brand supermarket discount chain that has targeted the U.S. market for expansion.
If you just want to open an old, simple and old grocery store, it's probably too late to get traction at the local market. Instead, I would suggest you take a look at a specialty grocery store where, in addition to grocery stores, it offers "personalized" specialty food and services. Add a hook or reason why a customer would buy their store instead of going to the competition.
Add a large meat market where butchers can cut or prepare meats by hand to customer specifications.
Add a large bakery that sells high-quality breads and desserts.
Add a traditional store and also a ready-made or pre-cooked store with an exotic variety of foods from around the world.
Be different, creative, high quality and the store customers attend for specialized meals or special occasions. they'll buy their specialties, but they'll still load their cart with staples.
