Nickel alloy castings are mainly used for their excellent heat resistance and corrosion resistance.
In North America, the names of cast stainless steels and nickel-based alloys describe their chemical composition and use. Designations beginning with the letter "C" indicate that the alloy is intended primarily for corrosive service. If the first letter is "H", the alloy is typically used for high temperature service at 1200° F or above.
Common high-nickel alloys include Monel, Inconel, and Hastelloy.
Monel
Monel is the general name for a group of nickel-based castings and nickel alloys, consisting mainly of nickel and copper, with small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon and silicon. Monel is stronger than pure nickel and resists corrosion in many media, including fast-moving seawater. Compared to steel, monel is difficult to machine because it works very rapidly. It needs to turn and work at low speeds and feed rates.
Inconel
Inconel, sometimes referred to as "Inco", is a family of austenitic nickel-chromium-based superalloys. Inconel's resistance to oxidation and corrosion makes it ideal for use in extreme environments subject to pressure and high temperatures. When heated, Inconel forms a thick and stable passivating oxide layer that protects the surface from further attack. Inconel maintains strength over a wide temperature range and is attractive for high temperature applications where aluminum and steel would succumb to creep due to thermally induced crystalline vacancies. The high temperature strength of Inconel develops through solid solution strengthening or precipitation hardening, depending on the alloy.
Inconel is commonly used in high temperature applications. Common trade names for Inconel Alloy 625 include: Inconel 625, Chronin 625, Altemp 625, Haynes 625, Nickelvac 625, and Nicrofer 6020.

Magnesium is the lightest structural material, about 1.8 grams per cubic centimetre. magnesium is the 8th most abundant element in the earth’s crust. It occurs naturally in Dolomite, Magnesite, Carnallite and Chloride (sea water). Magnesium is produced from sea water, brines and magnesium-bearing minerals which offer unlimited reserves.
Magnesium is 75% lighter than steel, 33% lighter than aluminum, offers component and feature integration and provides a high dimensional stability that improves fit and finish.
Benefits of Magnesium
Lightest of all structural materials
75% lighter than steel
33% lighter than aluminum
High impact resistance
High strength to weight ratio
Can be cast to net shape
Excellent dimensional stability/repeatability
Abundant material supply
100% recyclable
Advantages of Magnesium Die Casting
Lightest of all structural materials
Excellent Stiffness
Outstanding EMI and RFI shielding properties, perfect for connectors and electrical housings
Withstands high operating temperatures
Exceptional thin wall capability
Good environmental corrosion resistance
Excellent dimensional stability/repeatability
Good finishing characteristics
100% recyclable

Gray iron castings provide durability, hardness and strength to any operation in which they are used. There are many applications for gray iron castings. As non-combustible building elements, they provide excellent fire protection for wooden support structures. Additionally, their graphite/graphite flake content can be used for energy dissipation in components such as engine blocks and crankshafts, which depend on the damping of mechanical vibrations.
Gray iron castings are frequently used in the manufacture of: valves, housings, engine blocks, molds, pump casings, pipes, brake drums, trim and gray iron cookware.
Benefits of gray iron castings
Gray cast iron has many advantages. First, it imparts high damping capacity, compressive and tensile strength to the product. Second, it's quick and easy to produce. Also, due to the presence of graphite and graphite flakes, gray cast iron has good machinability and weldability. With it, cast iron foundries can create a wide variety of complex shapes. Additionally, the gray iron casting process produces less shrinkage during cooling than similar casting methods. This means that castings require little secondary machining. Best of all, gray iron castings are relatively cheap, so investing in them won't break the bank.
Gray iron castings do have a disadvantage in that they are not shock resistant and will shatter instantly with sufficient force.

Sand casting is a metal casting manufacturing technique that involves using sand to create molds. This process is used to manufacture metal products of various shapes and sizes.
How does sand casting work?
The sand casting molding process consists of several steps. The sand casting process begins with the creation of a mold pattern and gating system. Each pattern requires a new mold designed to match the exact size and shape of the target part. The setup also requires a two-part casting flask called the cap and drag.
The mold model is placed in the sand and the gating system is provided with a series of tunnels and a pouring cup. After the sand is filled around the model, the model is removed, leaving the mold cavity.
The metal is then heated to high temperatures, turning the metal into a liquid state. The temperature required to melt the metal depends on the alloy. Some metals take longer to heat up.
The molten metal is poured into the mold cavity. After the metal is poured into the mold, the metal begins to cool and solidify. To remove the part, the sand mold is separated along the parting line. During this process, the mold cavity is destroyed. However, mold models are usually reusable.
Advantages of Sand Casting
The main advantages of this casting process include:
Reduced costs for low-volume production runs
Suitable for manufacturing large parts
Ability to use ferrous or non-ferrous metals
Shorter lead times compared to other processes
One of the most attractive features is that it has the lowest initial setup cost. The process is also easier to modify and reduces the cost of tooling changes.
Due to these characteristics, this casting method is ideal for small to medium batch production, prototype castings and conversion of welded components to castings.
