Help documents Google snippets now provide additional guidance on writing bad descriptions versus the best description above me.
Focus - Google's help document on controlling your snippets in search results added some examples of "bad" and "best" descriptions.
Bad. Google advises avoiding these four types of "bad" descriptions:
List of keywords: "Sewing supplies, threads, colored pencils, sewing machines, threads, poppins and needles"
Same description used in each news article: "Local news in Whoville, delivered to your doorstep. find out what happened today ".
The page does not summarize: "Eggs are a source of joy in everyone's life. When I was a little boy, I remember stealing eggs from the hen house and bringing them to the kitchen. Those were the days
Too short: Mechanical pencil.
The best. Google examples of better descriptions:
Explains what the store sells and details such as working hours and location. "Get everything you need to sew your next dress. Open Monday to Friday from 8 to 5 p.m., located in the fashion district. "
Use an excerpt from the specific news article: "A local elderly man annoys the small town of Wovell, stealing everyone's gifts the night before an important event. Stay tuned for live updates on this issue. "
Summarize the entire page:
"Learn how to cook eggs using this complete guide within 1 hour or less. We cover all methods, including: the very easy and sunny side, boiling, poaching. "
Specific and detailed.
"A self-sharpening mechanical pencil corrects your automatic skill. Includes 2B pioneer automatic renewal. Available in Vintage Pink and Schoolbus Yellow. Order 50 + pencils, get free shipping. "
Updated document. Google published its documents on controlling your extracts in search results in October. You can see all the new additions here.
Why do we care?
Although there is nothing ground-breaking and this is mostly just a basic children's engine, it's good to see Google offer some more specific guidance on how to create useful and descriptive meta descriptions that are more likely to get clicks and traffic. Not that we can rely on Google to use those meta-descriptions, of course.
