XL American Bully FAQ
Is An American Bully Dog Aggressive?
Not at all, in fact this is one of the biggest myths surrounding the American Bully Breed. This misconception comes from the bullies strong physical appearance, but the truth is that this breed is more of a gentle giant that loves care and attention more than anything else.
Are American Bullies Good For First Time Owners?
As long as you realize the commitment and time that comes with the responsibility of owning a dog in general. Their kind temperament and obedient personalities make American Bullies one of the best for first time owners, but this is dependent on the fact that you will do your research and strive to give your best friend all the love and attention that it needs.
As long as you provide a loving home, your American Bully will fill it with lots of amazing memories. Just because they are more ideal for first time owners doesn't mean that raising one will be an easy walk in the park.
What Is The Temperament Of An American Bully?
Contrary to the popular myth that holds bullies as aggressive creatures, they are actually very loving and gentle. Just because they hold a big physical features doesn't imply they are mean and have to prove their size to anyone or any other dog. They are quite obedient and you will find their temperament equal to an over-sized 'teddy bear'. They are all bark and no bite but will even hold back on their barks most of the time.
The only menacing thing about american bullies are their appearance, that's why this canine breed was made specifically for family companionship, not as a guard dog or hunting dog like its stature would suggest.
Do American Bullies Howl Or Bark A Lot?
When they are young they tend to be more vigilant towards movements around their environment but with the right training as they grow older they will know not to bark or howl at every passing squirrel or mail men. Compared to other dog breeds, the am. bully is known to have a low 'vocality' level which means even when young and untrained, they wont cause a ruckus like other breeds will.

The explanation behind the decision to ban American Bullies and American Pitbulls from being sold in Turkey.
XL American Bully Puppies For Sale Article Link
When it comes to real world examples of American Bully myths that are false but continue to be taken as fact, there is no scenario as harmful as the events that led to the outlawing of various American Pitbull breeds.
Due to the Bully’s similarity to the Pitbull in looks from high levels of shared genetic components, they are incorrectly summed up with XL American Pitbulls, despite the significant differences in other genetic aspects such as behavior and instinctual purpose.
This false information is rarely corrected because it serves a positive effect with breeder kennels who wish to sell XL puppies for max profits without caring about much else.
Without the proper knowledge of the differences between Bullies and Pitbulls, breeders think that promoting these rumors are ‘harmless’ because in the short-term it seems like it wouldn’t have any negative consequences.
However, with extensive research, dog breed experts can observe the ill effects that this gossip can have on the reputation of the American Pitbull Terrier and the American Bully.
Why is it so bad to confuse the sale of American Pitbull Terrier puppies with the American Bully breed?
The damage of spreading fake news against these types of hounds completely disregards the special reasons why they are categorized as different breeds in the first place.
If the kennels spreading these lies were instead talking about human people, and the Pitbull or Am. Bully breeds took the form of ethnicities within genetic races such as the hispanic population, it would be like someone discussing how a person of Mexican descent is exactly equivalent to someone of Colombian descent.
An individual with very little knowledge of hispanic ethnicity groups that hear this information may accept it as true since they share a long list of commonalities such as similar appearances, sharing of the Spanish language, common ancestry from a colonial Spaniard past mixed with indigenous native traditions.
Yet, these factors are what classifies them as one of hispanic heritage, but they also stop sharing cultures at a certain point down the line to give them specific identifiers that make them be called Colombian or Mexican.
Both Colombians and Mexicans share a very similar genetic makeup, but have different gene pools because of the regionally separate Native American cultures from which they evolved.
This applies just as true within their own cultures, as many ancient traditions from these long gone civilizations are specific to the location that they lived in, with these two nationalities being hundreds of miles apart.
These geographical origins even apply to the Spanish language, since these past civilizations carry their native tongue through future generations within their national use of slang words or colloquial dialects.
Just like the example above, Pitbulls and Bullies both come from the same shared dog breed ancestor, but they have clear differences between the two that make it enough to classify them as two individual hound types.
Being able to place them into two uniquely named groups gives the reasoning for their separation a scientific explanation that makes it impossible to confuse the two with each other once you understand why they are divided in the first place,
American Pitbull and Bully breed features have logical reasons for being separated with valid scientific proof.
As mentioned earlier in the beginning of the article and in our previous publications, XL Am. Bullies and American Pitbulls have many of the same pieces of DNA that control their appearance.
It’s not uncommon to have an XL American Bully youngster that looks more ‘bully-ish’ than an actual American Pitbull Terrier puppy.
This makes it easy for breeders who don’t care about their litters to make a quick and easy profit by mislabeling the two for selfish marketing purposes since the American Pitbull puppy came first to the scene almost 200 years before the American Bully did.
Nevertheless, it’s at this point where roots of the myth issue begin to take form because the genetic code of each puppy type is way different inside the category of breed behavior traits.
The modern American Pitbull Terrier was selectively bred to be a utility working dog breed and help their hunting owners on the wilderness fields by carrying out certain tasks that made it easier to kill or herd targeted prey.
(Hence the name Pitbull coming from a reference to the hound breed’s ability to take down, or ‘pit’, a bull bovine animal)
In contrast, the XL American Bully was genetically modified in recent times (only a few decades ago in the 1990’s) to eliminate these prey hunting characteristics and replace them with the non-aggressive, emotionally nurturing, and anxiety reducing traits commonly found in companion dog breeds.
If we view the American Pitbull puppies as a capable off-road sport utility vehicle (SUV) like the Jeep or Hummer car brands, then the XL American Bully puppies would be the luxurious, smooth, and comfortable touring sedan automobiles equivalent to Cadillac or Lexus models.
Despite the sound scientific data surrounding the classification of Pitbulls and Bullies, their similar heritage alongside the lack of general breed education continues to make it easy for misinformation to spread around as the norm.
Rumored myths surrounding the American Bully in regards to their association with American Pitbull Terriers have become such an issue that they caused another country’s government to ban both of them altogether with several other breeds that branch off from the generic Pitbull lineage family tree.
How did it become illegal to own an American Pitbull Terrier or American Bully puppy in Turkey?
Ultimately, it came down to the sphere of influence that the speakers who preached those previously stated rumorous myths had on the heads of state within the Turkish government.
Wielding large levels of political power within their legislative system made it relatively easy to pass a law which severely limited the ownership of multiple Pitbull breeds without much resistance.
A small number of minor incidents occurred within some of the nation’s local areas which combined with the misinformation towards the false perception of the American Pitbull & Bully’s danger to the general population in society.
Therefore a massive overreaction from influential figures surrounding the inner circles of powerful Turkish government politicians prompted a stern reaction in the form of restrictive ownership regulations in the form of a gigantic rules list.
Unfortunately after searching the internet extensively for an English version of the document without any luck in finding one, we’ve taken the time to translate the official government decree which essentially outlawed American Pitbulls and Am, Bullies by making the requirements needed to lawfully comply with the new ruleset virtually impossible to uphold.
Why risk a legal penalty in the form of hefty fines or imprisonment time when you could easily elect to adopt another dog breed not mentioned in the ban?
Our in-house bully experts here at Affinity Kennels felt it was necessary to use the resources required to provide a English edition of the American Pitbull Terriers & Bully ban law document and serve as an example of what could go wrong in the worst possible scenario if nothing is done to educate the public on the differences between these two breeds.
This way if a lawful decree must be ordered to ban American Pitbull breeds within that family lineage sometime in the future, then the decision will be carried out using scientifically based facts after being carefully reviewed with all of the truthful and relevant information, instead of loose hearsay caused by loud fear mongering voiced by those who have no experience with neither American Pitbull Terriers or Bullies.
Circular On Dangerous Animals (Turkish Dog Ban Decree Document) English Language Translation:
“The Law No. 7332 on Amending the Animal Protection Law and the Turkish Penal Code was published in the Official Gazette dated 14.07.2021 and numbered 31541 and entered into force. Again, these sterilized and registered animals cannot be walked around without registration documents, muzzles and leashes, and cannot be brought into places where the public is concentrated, as well as children's playgrounds and parks. An administrative fine of 11 thousand TL will be imposed on those who violate these provisions; In case of repetition of violation of the prohibitions specified, the animals will be confiscated with an administrative fine and the animal will be taken to the animal shelter by the nearest municipality that has a nursing home where it can be placed.”
Original Turkish Language Declaration Document Source
It’s clear from reading the first sentence within the title of the document that this piece of legislation was crafted from a mass hysteria of emotional fear instead of logical, factual reasoning.
The entire text is full of emotionally striking verbiage implying that all Pitbull breed types mentioned are viciously risky to own, yet it provides no factual basis for any of the stated claims,
One solution to fighting back against lies that hurt the reputation of gentle giant American Bully and Pitbull puppies.
One of the founding missions imagined by our founder and top Bully breed expert David was to create the realistic vision of a world without this tarnished reputation revolving around all Pitbull breeds.
The Affinity Kennel principles from the very beginning set out to turn that dream into a reality by focusing efforts on the care of the XL American Bully breed.
This philosophy extends through many methods, from the free access to XL American Bully breed specific learning materials educating everyone towards the realities of what makes this beautiful hound type so special, while simultaneously removing the mythical over exaggeration of non-existent negative traits.
In addition to our dedicated public outreach spreading positive awareness of American Pitbulls & Bullies, we trickle this notion down to how we raise our XL bully puppy litters and the following preparation to the future owners who will soon be lifelong members of the Affinity Family lineage.

An in-depth exploration whether the American Bully (different from the American Pitbull) dog breed is high or low maintenance?
Full XL Bully Article
At first this seems like a simple question, is one of the USA's fastest growing popular dog breeds hard to take care of? Or does it act in an obedient way that makes taking care of them easier than the average dog? Although dogs have multiple personality types across all the different breeds, many people can summarize them into 2 basic categories:
Tough to manage. Has high levels of defiant, aggressiveness, and/or anti-social behaviors, making it high maintenance for ownership because of how much more time and resources must be invested to overcome these natural and negative traits.
Easier than other dog breeds. Displays many forms of obedience and warm friendliness towards everyone, causing very low stress and anxiety levels.
If you came here for a short, direct answer: No they aren't much trouble to own, and generally have lower maintenance requirements than the average dog due to their selective breeding that crafted genes made to excel in companionship rather than a utility purpose such as the American Pitbull.
However, the keyword is generally.
Because dogs are all unique to their own personalities, your puppy is only influenced by their breed traits, but how they will act depends a lot on the individual canine, or more specifically the owner and how developed they choose to make their training.
If they are properly trained and nurtured during their puppy phases, then the already loving/caring nature of American Bullies will be at its peak behavior which gives you the least amount of maintenance issues as an owner.
This is why our bullies here at Affinity Kennels carry such a high average rating among those who've joined our puppy family. From the day they're born they are put through an early life stage training process uniquely created by our founder & American Bully Breed Expert, David, to bring out the genetic sweetness in the bully DNA in the most effective way possible.
He continues this until the day they're adopted, then is in the process of preparing a one of a kind training regimen with easy to understand instructions on what to do to keep this crucial training in their lives. Because he shares the methods in ways that are simple to follow, even new dog owners can excel in training their bullies.
Their preparation combined with the organic, non-aggressive temperament that bullies have is what makes an Affinity Bully pup one of the industry's best examples of a low maintenance family dog.
A dog's maintenance level has to do with its breed characteristics and owners quality of training.
Remember the word to keep in mind is generally.
Affinity Bullies are at the highest end of examples but others who buy their bully puppies from one of the many low quality breeders in the industry may find it harder to upkeep.
All pets carry a level of responsibility that will make it impossible to have it be easy enough to be neglectful. Low maintenance does not mean easy or have low amounts of consuming personal time. These amazing puppies were bred for emotional companionship so they will still require lots of love and attention!
The (false) reason why some think owning a bully will be a risky challenge.
Since the american bully comes from the american pitbull, and shares many of their features, the two breeds are easily mixed together.
In reality, the truth is that an American pitbull will require more maintenance than an Am. Bully because its genetics being a utility working dog will have more aggressive tendencies for its tasks.
The American Bully has a different genetic make-up. Its breed may look similar to the American Pitbull because of their shared characteristics in appearance.
Due to this similarity, many bullies are advertised as xl american pitbulls for sale.
An American Pitbull will be a different experience altogether due to this difference.
Will it be different if I buy an XL American Pitbull puppy?
Yes, which is why the real problem with American bully myths is the misguided advertising of XL pitbull puppies being sold as XL Am. bullies and vise versa.
American Bully Breed = Multiple ‘bully’ breeds, but mostly American Staffordshire Terriers + American Pitbull Terriers
Because of this genetic makeup, American Bully dogs can have traits that more closely resemble the appearance of one or multiple breeds.
Here are two examples of each breed:
American Staffordshire Terrier
American Pitbull Terrier
So while the American Bully looks larger than regular Pitbulls, their faces can appear to be more Staffordshire Terrier or American Pitbull depending on the individual dog.
Why do bully breeders sell their puppies as XL American Pitbulls?
Despite the issues that come from myths surrounding the american bully, breeding kennels will market their puppies as pitbulls for the sole reason that they look like pitbulls (sometimes even more like pitbulls than the actual single breed itself).
This makes breeders market XL american bullies as XL american Pitbulls instead.
Since the Pitbull has a longer history it is more popular and well known, therefore making it easier to just advertise puppies as the latter.
More searches and demand for Pitbulls makes it easy to conceal American bullies as such, with many people believing that ‘American Bully’ is just another nickname for the USA Pitbull rather than a different breed altogether.
Lets face it, the American Bully is ‘Bullier’ than the pitbull, especially in the XL size, so many industry breeders just add to the complication by going along with this traditional practice of mislabeling the breed.
How much work will a legitimate XL American Bully Puppy be?
In conclusion, all this info points to an Am. bully puppy being less maintenance than an XL Pitbull. This answer is very generalized and will depend on how the puppy has been trained in its upbringing, but if you want the least work possible when searching for an XL american bully puppy to join your family, Affinity Kennels is the most helpful breeder in the marketplace.
Our bullies are some of the best behaved and opposite of high maintenance examples for sale, which will help you stop searching and begin the process of getting a new best friend.
If you decide to continue your search outside our puppies, keep in mind that not all XL Pitbulls will be Pitbulls if you are more familiar with that breed and know it's exactly what you want. If you are now considering buying an American bully, then continue to research and check the background of the puppy from the breeder to make sure it's a legit bully puppy.
Please feel free to contact our bully expert staff with any questions you may have about any topics discussed in the article or about American bullies; we will be happy to help you find the answers you’re looking for whether you end up buying one of our beautiful puppies or not!

Why Are American Bullies Amazing Emotional Support Therapy Dogs?
Compared to other breeds the American Bully variety is at the top of any list for best pedigrees to act as emotional support animals. They have all of the right traits which fit the excellent characteristics of a sensitivity supporting pet, but many people overlook this dog type due to the common misconceptions that surround these beautiful creatures.
What are the usual misunderstandings with USA Bullies?
The simplest way to describe why they are misjudged as "aggressive or mean" is their similarity to the looks of American Pitbulls & Bulldogs, which hold a more "threatening" reputation among general owners. Even that rep is a broad generalization (since most large canine types have the potential to be dangerous) but nothing could be further from the truth when looking at Bullies, especially when looking at well bred examples such as our Affinity kennel ones.
How is the Bully different from other large hounds?
Although they can be extremely similar in image to those tail-waggers mentioned earlier, their personalities are completely different. Bullies have a fairly new family tree first popping up in the 1990‘s by combining genes from mainly the American Staffordshire Terrier, with desired traits from Pitbulls, Bulldogs, and the Old English Bulldogge through generations of selective breeding.
However, the American Bully fits into its own unique category out of this list of tail-waggers because it was specifically created to be in the 'companion' category rather than the 'work' one that the rest of those traditional hounds fall into.
Because of this large and strong figure yet kind and loving nature Bullies are commonly known as "gentle giants" by dog owners that know them well. If you wish to learn more about their physical & mental nature, please read the official breed standardization document from UKC
"The American Bully breed is, first and foremost, a companion, exhibiting confidence with a zest and exuberance for life. Despite its powerful appearance, their demeanor is gentle and friendly. This breed makes an excellent family dog. The ideal American Bully possesses the athleticism to do well in performance events. Aggressive behavior towards humans is uncharacteristic of the breed, and highly undesirable." -United Kennel Club (UKC).
Companion vs. Working breeds, what’s the difference?
A working dog refers to the identity of more traditional 'Mastiff' or large tail-waggers that were bred to achieve a special task such as hunting, herding, tracking, or any general field (or farming) assistance.
Oppositely, a companion pooch is bred not to work but to provide warmth, love, and company to any human owner. That's why American Bullies make perfect family dogs while still holding strongly majestic appearance that is a good representation for owners who don't want a small 'toy' dog which would also fall into the companionship category.
With the Am. Bully you get the best of both worlds, having the added benefit of being easier to train/maintain than 'working' dogs due to their nature to fight off loneliness instead of a specific task which requires specific exercises to release energy (such as a retrievers' need to fetch object and return them to you simulating hunting work).
Although, It's important to keep in mind that a companion dog is generally better suited for an emotional support animal rather than a service assistance pet, both of which serve very different purposes in an owners day-to-day lifestyle.
Bullies can be efficient in both roles, with the right training they can be conditioned to become service dogs and work within a healthcare or caregiving setting or they can be sentimental supporting hounds where they are ranked one of the highest breeds that provide comfort for individuals that need it most. Since they are capable of both servial roles, it all depends on the capabilities of the individual pooch.
Emotional Support compared to Service Assistance:
Helping (or 'facility') dogs are often confused with canines that provide affection and comfort (or 'therapy') dogs, but there are several important differences between these two.
Facility Assisting Service Dog Traits:
These pups are highly trained from birth by accredited schools to provide medical or critical support to their owners who may suffer from some form of physical or mental disability that requires them to need constant attention.
An example would be someone who suffers from epileptic seizures and require their dog to search for people that can render medical aid in case of suffering from an injury without anyone in the immediate surroundings that observe it. The aid is provided by the extremely specific training of the dog in such an event. Because these pups deal with life-threatening situations they are a necessity for the owners well-being therefore need to follow them into places where normal pet dogs wouldn't be allowed to enter.
Because of this special permission they follow the following strict guidelines:
Must be specifically trained to reduce the owner's disability dangers in at least one way.
For example; opening doors, detecting high blood sugar or allergens and notifying of such, alerting to a ringing phone, leading those who are visually or mobility impaired.
Must be highly disciplined not to be a bother when in a public or restricted setting.
This means they must be trained well enough to be safe with the general population and overall very civil, such as having good health and cleanliness.
Must have an owner that it helps with a medical disability and meet the legal definition of said disability in the specific country or region that it operates in.
Generally the law will vary depending on the location of the pup human pair but for the most part as long as they act as if they behave in a manner that is polite and non-disruptive then they should be allowed into any place where the owner needs them, but this is level of obedience and task training is usually not possible without the special training certification schools.
Emotional Therapy Dog Traits:
These hounds trained to provide sentimental care, soothe and cooperate with people who suffer from mental conditions that make it hard to function within stressful or demanding situations or settings such as hospitals, courthouses, or educational centers. These ailments can range anywhere from anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), issues with social communication, or mild to severe depression.
While this category doesn't require the strict training and certification that facility hounds do, there are still regional organizations who provide the requirements necessary to provide emotional relief and become a therapeutic resource.
Generally the guidelines follow a more flexible set of requirements:
Properly handle external distractions from the surrounding environment.
Anything such as unexpected loud noises, physical touching, odd behaviors from people who aren't their owner, or any other strange form of stimuli without causing a noticeable reaction that could be interpreted as dangerous or annoying.
Be friendly and very patient with everyone they interact with, especially seniors and/or children.
They must be able to handle long periods of these social communications without having a scary or confrontational reaction in their behavior such as biting or barking in a threatening manner.
Provide emotional stimulation to the owner or affected user.
Ideally in a manner which encourages them to engage in positive cognitive and social activities/behaviors to relieve some of the symptoms that their condition causes.
What does this mean for a potential American Bully owner looking for these therapeutic aspects in their pet?
We know this may be a lot of info to take in at first but dog ownership is a big responsibility so it is always advised to learn as much as possible about the dog breeds you are considering adopting, but also keep in mind the things that you are looking for in a canine pet.
If you're looking for a loving family dog that gets along with everyone with no aggressive habits while still maintaining a certain level or size and strength then choosing a bully puts you on the perfect track.
Maybe you want man’s best friend as a guard hound to protect your property or certain valuable items or your searching for a work dog that fits certain careers that could provide significant help in (like farming) or match an extremely active lifestyle (such as pro athlete). In these cases you are better off with a more traditional working pedigree that will match those needs better than the bully.

Because of our dedication to these values we are confident that no matter what choice you decide in the end, it will result in a lifelong bond with you and your pet puppy! Please don't just take our word for everything discussed in this article, read how one of our past customers who became a Affinity Kennel Family Member and highly benefited from the traits that make American Bullies an excellent example of an emotional support therapy dog pet.
A real world example of how our American Bully Pup became an emotional support necessity for a former military member who struggles with certain things after participating in active service:
Below is the story of how one of our bully lineage pups affected the life of veteran Daniel j. Dougherty of Levittown, Pennsylvania in his own words:
Mending a broken heart and finding my new soul mate all in the same week.
"I am a 100% mentally disabled veteran with PTSD and i lost my previous emotional support angel 😇. That same week i randomly found a picture of this beautiful angel and i immediately knew i had to have her she is the 1 so i nervously called and spoke with David himself. Right away i knew by speaking with him he wasn't only a breeder he was a breeder that loves every dog hes has and or has produced. So my level of comfort discussing my interest in a puppy he had for sale was very pleasant not only that but he started off saying when you buy a puppy from me you become part of a family, and that was awesome and refreshing at the same time. I was looking for a pitbull and didn't know as much about this specific breed the XL American Bully, so i was honest and David fully educated me on the breed which was great because i knew exactly what i was getting down to the exact sweetness she perpetuates. The transaction was very simple to make payment and David doesn't play once you puppy is purchased he hand picks the person who will fly your angel to you very easy airport exchange which David walked me through being my first time. Naming her my wife and i love the character Harley-Quinn. As she began to grow we noticed little differences from our last puppy she was built like a tank and has a heart bigger than i could ever imagine. She was also a natural emotional support dog because she is very intuitive and can tell if someone is hurting inside without you crying she started out by laying across me to stop my flashbacks, she would lick me until i woke up from a nightmare, and she would hug me literally hug me every time i cried which is very often. She now frequents PTSD wards where other veterans like myself could use a little love and she plays the part a born natural. These dogs as far as quality these guys are Rolls Royce of dogs, not because of there cost but because of there quality. David also has the best guarantee with every puppy he sells no one else is willing to guarantee you as much as David will health wise with your purchase. I would definitely buy another puppy from him in the future as well for my 2nd addition coming hopefully in the next 6 months.
The biggest take away is you have David who loves these dogs and he becomes family he takes every call asks for Christmas photos just like i do with my grandchild. David also can educate you on why these dogs are so loving, faithful ,obedient ,and truly the best dogs to own.
Thank you Affinity Kennels and David Lloyd 5 🌟 review."
