Far lateral disc herniations are uncommon but very painful. The disc herniates outside the neural foramen as compared to the more common postero-lateral herniations, which occur inside the spinal canal. These herniations require surgery in most cases. There are many ways of doing this surgery but MISS- Minimally Invasive Spine surgery has changed the outcomes for these herniations.
The surgery performed at our center is through a 18mm tubular retractor system through a small incision like a keyhole. This allows good visualisation of the anatomy under the light and magnification of a microscope.
The idea is to remove the herniated disc fragments pressing on the nerve roots to achieve adequate decompression.
